Why a Movie Would Be Better Than Another Series
Animal Kingdom did not have the most satisfying TV show ending, with the finale leaving many of the main characters alone and dealing with the consequences of their actions. While the conclusion fit the Shakespearean tone of the show, it left plenty of opportunity for an Animal Kingdom spin-off. That said, there are more creative options for the show than another TV series.
Returning to the world of Animal Kingdom‘s Cody crime family is likely to be popular among its audience after the show found success streaming on Netflix. However, for every success like Better Call Saul, there are many unsuccessful spin-off shows. Instead, an Animal Kingdom spin-off could happen in movie form, like many other excellent TV shows that concluded with a movie.
Animal Kingdom Deserves A Spinoff, But It Would Work Better As A Movie Than A Show
The Breaking Bad finale showed Jesse getting away, but with his fate unclear, so the team made El Camino to give the audience closure. An Animal Kingdom spin-off movie could work in a similar manner, expanding the fate of a character in a tension-filled conclusion to the series. Spin-off series can often run out of steam, but a short movie can be much more gripping.
Animal Kingdom has already proven that it can work as a film, as the TV show was based on a movie of the same name that was released in 2010. While the show made some changes, like moving locations from Australia to California, it expanded the movie’s lore. As the Cody family is based on the real-life Pettingill crime family, there are more perspectives to explore.
What An Animal Kingdom Streaming Movie Could Look Like
The six seasons of Animal Kingdom have given plenty of opportunity for a movie, with several exciting possibilities. An Animal Kingdom movie could follow the example set by El Camino and focus on one character, giving them a satisfying ending. There are many options, but as Deran and J are both still alive, either one would be a good candidate for a spin-off.
J might have secured his future in luxury, but he would likely have to contend with both loneliness and the knowledge that he betrayed his family. That could lead to a movie showing J rebuilding his life. Alternatively, Deran’s departure could be a more interesting plot to follow. With Deran promising to look after Nicholas, a movie could put challenges in his way.
Better Call Saul took a supporting character and gave him a fascinating backstory. Rather than focus on the paths of the powerful main characters in Animal Kingdom, a spin-off movie could feature a minor character. This would free the writers from having to continue a story thread while providing opportunities for the main characters to cameo, whether in present-action or flashback scenes.
