Wait, Is Loki An Official Avenger In Doomsday?
Tom Hiddleston is returning as Loki in Avengers: Doomsday, and while a heroic version of the longtime villain was expected, he may be an official member of the Avengers in Phase 6. Audiences last saw the god of mischief sacrifice himself at the End of Time in Loki season 2’s finale, positioning him for a key role in the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga.
While Marvel Studios confirmed he’d be involved by listing Hiddleston among Doomsday‘s cast announcement, the exact nature of Loki’s role was still up for debate. Most discussions have been tied to how pivotal he’ll be in stopping Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom or the excitement about seeing him reunite with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor.
Both of those may take on different forms now. While we wait for Marvel to debut the official Avengers: Doomsday trailer this month, a new video suggests Loki will become an official member of the team that originally united to fight him.
Loki Was Included Alongside Sam’s Presumed Avengers Team In New Doomsday Presentation
Marvel Studios and Walt Disney Studios are actively hyping up Avengers: Doomsday when they can, which includes at the Italian film industry event known as Giornate Di Cinema Sorrento. Walt Disney had a presentation there and included a brief section for the MCU movie, showing off the cast list in different groupings of headshots, which is now circulating online.
Most of it was not surprising. The Fantastic Four actors were lumped together, as were the Thunderbolts and X-Men. Shuri, M’Baku, and Namor were grouped, too. But, there was also a selection that resembles the presumed roster of Sam Wilson’s new Avengers team.
This slide showed Hiddleston’s Loki among Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Anthony Mackie (Captain America), and Danny Ramirez (Falcon), with Simu Liu (Shang-Chi) likely just out of frame.
With all the other confirmed cast members and characters grouped together based on their team, Loki’s placement alongside the heroes who expect to be Sam’s Avengers team is notable. It suggests that he may be an official Avenger in Doomsday. At the very least, it implies that his storyline is directly tied to what Thor, Ant-Man, Captain America, Falcon, and Shang-Chi are up to.
Loki Being An Official Avenger Makes Sense For Doomsday
For a long time, Loki was one of the MCU’s defining villains before turning more into an anti-hero. He officially turned the corner to become a hero in Phase 4, though. The variant created by Avengers: Endgame had an incredibly heroic journey across two seasons of Loki, learning to put others before himself and use his incredible powers for good.
Rather than Loki falling back into villainy in Doomsday, it always felt more logical for him to be opposed to Doom. But that could be done without him becoming a proper Avenger. The film could just keep him alongside the new roster as Thor seeks to protect his brother from a multiversal villain.
That would likely give Loki a more passive role in the movie, though, one where he’s potentially being protected to stop Doom’s plans from coming to fruition. But after watching the god of mischief’s heroic turn, he deserves a role and status that properly showcases just how different this version of the character is.
Making him an official Avenger would do that. Not only would it be incredibly cool to see Thor and Loki fighting alongside each other as members of the Avengers, but it’d be a satisfying continuation of, and possible conclusion to, the latter’s arc. Hopefully, Loki does achieve official Avenger status in Avengers: Doomsday as this video teases.
