Friday Night Lights
Amazon knew what they were doing when they put the complete series of Fright Night Lights on Prime Video on September 1. It was previously unavailable to stream anywhere for months, and now it has arrived right as schools are back in session and the NFL season is about to kick off.
Friday Night Lights is an adaptation of the book by the same name, written by Buzz Bissinger. Peter Berg (American Primeval) directed and co-wrote the screenplay for the 2004 feature film starring Billy Bob Thornton as Coach Gary Gaines before developing the series for television, which would go on to win 3 Emmys.
The number of outstanding actors who became notable from Friday Night Lights is astounding. It was a landmark role for Kyle Chandler as head coach Eric Taylor and shone an early spotlight on incredible actors like Taylor Kitsch (The Terminal List: Dark Wolf), Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), Minka Kelly (Ransom Canyon), Zach Gilford (Midnight Mass), and more.
With an iconic soundtrack by alternative rock band Explosions in the Sky, Friday Night Lights is wildly nostalgic to watch nowadays, nearly twenty years after it premiered. It remains not only one of the best football series ever made but arguably one of the greatest coming-of-age TV shows of all time, right up there with Freaks and Geeks and Skins.
The Man in the High Castle
The Man in the High Castle is an immersive and eerie dystopian sci-fi series set in a fictional alternative reality in which the Allied powers lost World War II. It takes place in an extremely different America influenced by German and Japanese cultures and politics that operates under a totalitarian government.
Yet another adaptation from the genius author Philip K. Dick, the man responsible for writing the source material for Blade Runner, Total Recall, and Minority Report, The Man in the High Castle was developed by Frank Spotnitz of The X-Files acclaim. It features an ensemble cast led by Alexa Davalos (The Punisher), Rufus Sewell (The Diplomat), Luke Kleintank (FBI), and Rupert Evans (Charmed).
The Man in the High Castle takes place in 1962 America under fascist rule. Davalos plays protagonist Juliana Crain, who gets tossed into the underworld of the American Resistance movement after her sister is killed by the Japanese, who control the Western half of the country while Germany occupies the eastern states. Juliana discovers film footage that shows the U.S. won the war, which opens up a giant conspiracy against the apparent powers that be.
A Prime original series, The Man in the High Castle ran for four seasons and 40 episodes from 2015 to 2019. It earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%, including an outstanding 95% rating for its debut season. If you’re looking for an unsettling sci-fi that blends elements of drama and historical fiction, then The Man in the High Castle is for you.
Sneaky Pete
Sneaky Pete is a highly underrated dark comedy that is available to stream on both Prime Video and Netflix. Co-created by Bryan Cranston just a few years after the conclusion of Breaking Bad, Sneaky Pete ran for three seasons and 30 episodes from 2015 to 2019 and earned an outstanding Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%.
Sneaky Pete released its pilot episode in 2015, but the remainder of its first season didn’t release on Prime Video until early 2017. The series follows a con man named Marius Josipovic, played by Giovanni Ribisi, who assumes the identity of his cellmate, Pete Murphy, after getting out of prison to remain undetected by a lethal gangster.
Sneaky Pete was co-created by David Shore, known for House, The Good Doctor, and Law & Order. In addition to Ribici’s lead role, it also stars Cranston, Marin Ireland (Homeland), Shane McRae (Silo), Jane Adams (Hacks), Malcolm-Jamal Warner (The Resident), and Margo Martindale (Your Honor).
One of the reasons Sneaky Pete flew under the radar was that Prime Video was just getting its footing in original programming. It was only the second original drama series ever produced by the streamer (the first being Bosch). Even ten years later, Sneaky Pete still holds up as a highly bingeable series with great acting, sharp humor, and an excellent story.
The Twilight Zone
The Twilight Zone (not to be confused with the 2019 reboot) is one of the most prolific TV series of the 20th century. Its influence on television history cannot be overstated, and neither can the impact that its creator and host, Rod Sterling, had on American culture for decades.
The Twilight Zone essentially paved the way for Netflix’s Black Mirror to become an award-winning dystopian sci-fi anthology series. The Twilight Zone consists of 156 episodes that play out like short films, all 25 minutes apiece (except for season 4, which are all 51 minutes each).
The Twilight Zone received an overall Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%, including two perfectly rated 100% RT seasons, which were released way back in 1959 and 1960. Despite the fact that the series was invented over 65 years ago, the stories remain fresh and engaging, the performances are nostalgic and delightful, and the myriad concepts are still intriguing to this day.
While some episodes of The Twilight Zone are hailed as masterpieces, such as season 2’s “The Howling Man” and season 5’s “Night Call,” it may be best to watch the entire series in order, although it’s not required. The Twilight Zone is right up there with I Love Lucy as truly timeless American television.
Fallout
Speaking of award-winning dystopian sci-fi series on Prime Video, Fallout is a much more modern example of the genre that is just as outstanding as The Twilight Zone. It’s also on par with The Last of Us as one of the greatest TV adaptations of a video game ever made.
Fallout earned 17 Emmy nominations last year, becoming one of the most popular options across all genres available on Prime Video. With season 2 expected to premiere on Christmas Day, now’s the perfect time to catch up or experience Fallout for the first time.
Starring Walton Goggins, who has had a lightning-hot year in television with two HBO shows, The Righteous Gemstones and The White Lotus, Fallout has already been renewed by Amazon for a third season. The series actually acts as a prequel to the original video game, suggesting that future seasons will lead up to the events in the game and eventually depict them.
Fallout received a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, with an equally impressive audience score to match. The series also stars Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets), Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks), Moises Arias (The King of Staten Island), and more. If you’re looking for a series with high entertainment value that’s guaranteed to hold your immersion, then Fallout is about as good as it gets for modern sci-fi options on Prime Video.
