Detroiters

If you loved Paul Rudd’s hit A24 comedy movie Friendship that released in theaters earlier this year and just hit HBO Max, then you’ve got to check out the buddy comedy series Detroiters. It also stars the unique comedic genius of former Saturday Night Live cast member and writer Tim Robinson, who co-created the series with co-star Sam Richardson of Veep acclaim, along with Joe Kelly (Ted Lasso) and Zach Kanin (I Think You Should Leave)

Detroiters has a lot of comedic talent and heartfelt passion across the board, particularly from its two co-stars, Robinson and Richardson, who play Tim and Sam, two local marketing creatives who make low-budget commercials in Detroit. Tim is married to Sam’s sister and is the son of a legend of Detroit advertising, leaving huge shoes he struggles to fill.

The real enjoyment of watching Detroiters is its fresh and unparalleled take on modern comedy. Those who are already familiar with Tim Robinson will know exactly what to expect, which is somewhat of an acquired taste but a very worthwhile and good one. The best way to see if Detroiters is right for you is by pressing play on episode 1.

Critics loved Detroiters during its two-season run, which averaged a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% collectively. Collider noted in their 5/5 star review for Detroiters season 2, “Tim and Sam’s friendship on and offscreen remains aspirational, as the joyful duo return with more of their sharp and sincere comedy that we desperately need.”

Also appearing in Detroiters are big-name comedic actors such as Jason Sudeikis, Kate McKinnon, Keegan-Michael Key, Juanita Jennings, Tim Meadows, Bobby Moynihan, Michael Che, and the late Malcolm-Jamal Walker. Detroiters ran for two seasons on Comedy Central from 2017 to 2018.

Maid is one of the first projects that really put Margaret Qualley on the map, along with her breakout role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Released in 2021, Maid follows a young mother named Alex Russell fleeing from an abusive relationship while trying to make ends meet as a housekeeper.

The Netflix original series is an adaptation of the best-selling memoir, “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive” by Stephanie Land. The series was developed for television by Molly Smith Metzler, known for Orange Is the New Black, Shameless, and the 2025 Emmy nominee Sirens.

Maid received three Emmy nominations in 2022 and earned Qualley her second Emmy nomination after 2019’s Fosse/Verdon. Four of Maid’s ten episodes were directed by 6-time Emmy winner John Wells, known for The West Wing, ER, and the HBO Max hit medical drama The Pitt.

Maid earned a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 94% matched with a strong audience score of 87%. Critics raved over Qualley’s lead performance, with Variety noting, “Qualley, a compelling and sharp performer, could lead viewers anywhere,” and The Hollywood Reporter saying, “Qualley is blessed with an expressive face that makes Alex an open book.”

Maid also garnered massive streaming popularity on Netflix, becoming the fourth most-watched original TV series on the platform in 2021. Even if you saw the series when it was released nearly four years ago, Maid is well worth a rewatch for Qualley’s performance, its gripping story, and its larger message about poverty in modern America.

At ten total episodes that run anywhere from 47 to 60 minutes, Maid is one of the best limited series available to watch on Netflix right now. It’s the type of riveting drama series that is wildly easy to get lost in and will keep you seated for hours. If you’re looking for something deeply immersive yet realistically tragic and emotionally raw, Maid is a great watch for this weekend.

Escape at Dannemora

Escape at Dannemora may just be the greatest yet somehow most overlooked limited series available to stream on Netflix right now. Starring two Oscar winners and two multi-time Emmy nominees, the prison drama series isn’t only intensely compelling from the first few minutes, but it’s also based on a true crime story.

Directed by Ben Stiller, known for Severance and dozens of classic comedies, Escape at Dannemora is co-created by Brett Johnson (Mad Men, Ray Donovan) and Michael Tolkin (The Player, The Offer). It stars Benicio Del Toro (Sicario) and Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) as two New York prison inmates who become romantically involved with a prison employee, played by Patrica Arquette (Boyhood), and view her as their key to escape.

Escape at Dannemora, which originally premiered on Showtime, should be in the conversation as the greatest miniseries of the 2010s, along with HBO’s The Night Of and Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. Even though it earned 12 Emmy nominations in 2019, including Outstanding Limited Series, it took home no awards and has been largely swept under the rug despite its critical success. Arquette, however, won a SAG Award and a Golden Globe for her performance as Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell.

Escape at Dannemora earned a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 89% and an even better audience score of 93%. Screen Rant’s review called it “smart” and “substantive,” while Collider considered it “an acting showcase that chronicles a bizarre blue-collar heist of sorts, which director Ben Stiller keeps tense and taught throughout; you can’t look away.”

At just seven episodes, each about an hour apiece, Escape at Dannemora is a highly bingeable series. Its series finale, however, is nearly the length of two episodes and feels like a feature film in and of itself, with a runtime of 1 hour and 40 minutes. The series is also available to stream on Paramount+ for those without a Netflix subscription.

While Escape at Dannemora is outstanding as a fictional limited series, it should be noted that the docudrama doesn’t necessarily stick to all the real-world true crime facts. If you’re a fan of the classic Fox series Prison Break, or any prison-related movie like The Shawshank Redemption or Escape from Alcatraz, then put Escape at Dannemora at the top of your Netflix watchlist this weekend. Some critics have noted it can be a bit of a slow burn at times, but the entire series is well worth the investment of your time and attention.
