Love & Death
Love & Death didn’t make as much buzz as it may have liked to when it was released in April 2023, despite its star-studded cast led by Elizabeth Olsen, Jesse Plemons, Krysten Ritter, and Tom Pelphrey. That said, it remains one of the best, albeit overlooked, crime drama series with elements of horror on HBO Max.
Love & Death tells the true crime story of Candy Montgomery, a churchgoing wife and mother in a small Texas town who infamously killed Betty Gore, the wife of the man she was having an affair with, Allan Gore. Olsen portrays Candy with an eerie magnetism in the 7-part miniseries created by David E. Kelley (Presumed Innocent, Big Little Lies).
Love & Death had the foundation to be one of the biggest HBO originals of 2023, but it only ended up getting a Rotten Tomatoes score of 63%, compared to a much higher audience score of 88%. The series also earned Plemons his third Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Allan Gore.
Although the critical reception was mixed, some critics did enjoy the series. The Wrap noted, “There’s just something about Elizabeth Olsen as a housewife with a dark side that is endlessly appealing.” Since Candy’s story is well-known and was already portrayed by Jessica Biel in a recent Hulu series, the difference in Love & Death really is the performances. This makes it worth watching this weekend if you’re looking for a horror-leaning series on HBO Max, since the streamer’s horror selection runs a bit thin.
The Jinx
The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst was a phenomenon when it premiered in 2015 and remains one of HBO’s best-ever true crime documentary series. The entire series, which consists of two 6-part seasons, one released a decade ago and the other a follow-up that came out just last year.
If you haven’t seen The Jinx in full yet, then now is the perfect time, since you won’t have to wait nine years between seasons to watch what has been called one of the best true crime docuseries of the 21st century. The series won 2 Emmys, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series, and has a strong 96% Rotten Tomatoes score for its first season. It is also ranked #163 in IMDb’s Top 250 TV Shows of all time.
The true triumph of The Jinx is not only the remarkably chilling story, but how the series of interviews results in a shocking, virtually unprecedented conclusion. Odds are you’ve read up on the story or heard about the major twist when the series first came out. But 10 years later, it still makes for highly entertaining television that could be the most unbelievable thing you watch all weekend.
The Chair Company
Since getting his start as a writer and brief cast member on Saturday Night Live, comedian Tim Robinson has grown to be one of the most prominent voices in scripted comedy of this generation. His original series Detroiters and I Think You Should Leave have become cult classics, and his A24 movie with Paul Rudd called Friendship is one of the most unique and hilarious comedies of the year.
Following up on all that, Robinson will premiere his first HBO series titled The Chair Company this Sunday, October 12, 2025. As with all of Robinson’s projects, you should be prepared for his particular brand of offbeat, over-the-top comedy, which may be best described as absurdist or, as Gen Z may categorize it, “cringe-maxing.”
The Chair Company will follow Robinson’s protagonist, William Ronald Trosper, who investigates a potential conspiracy after a humiliating event at work. The series also features performances by Simon Pearl, Eileen Noonan, and more, and will run for 8 weekly episodes until its finale is released on November 30, 2025.
If you are brand new to Robinson, go in with an open mind and maybe watch Friendship before diving into The Chair Company. He’s sort of an acquired taste that may take some time to get used to, but could very well become your new favorite comedic actor.
The series has already earned a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score ahead of its premiere. Screen Rant gave the series a 9/10-star rating. TV Guide called it “the funniest show of the year.” All signs indicate that Robinson is still at the top of his comedy game and that The Chair Company is the very best HBO Max show to watch this weekend.
