Top 20 Action-Packed Series to Stream on Amazon Prime Video
Amazon Prime Video is home to some of the most critically acclaimed and popular modern action series across all streaming platforms. Screen Rant’s selected the Top 20 action shows that are sure to keep your adrenaline pumping from start to finish, available exclusively on Prime Video.
Several of the very first Amazon Prime Video series have belonged to the action genre and have since become permanent staples of the streaming platform. While Hulu has a reputation for great comedy series and HBO Max has some of the best dramas ever made, it’s hard to beat Prime Video when it comes to high-octane action-adventure and thriller series.
Editor’s Note: The following list is not ranked in any particular order.
Countdown
Countdown was released at the end of June 2025 and has been one of the most popular action series on Prime Video this summer. The first season consists of 13 episodes, most of them about 45 minutes each. The series stars Jensen Ackles of Supernatural and The Boys, as well as Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, and Elliot Knight.
Countdown did not earn a strong Rotten Tomatoes score and received a surprisingly low 35% rating from critics. That said, its audience score was literally double that at 70%, and at-home viewers tend to enjoy the action series much more than critics. Ackles plays Mark Meachum, an LAPD officer on a secret task force who investigates a mysterious murder.
Hunters
Hunters combines dark comedy, psychological drama, and crime action thriller to create a truly unique viewing experience. Set in 1977 New York City, a troubled and vindictive man joins an underground battle against a secret group of Nazis who are in hiding and attempting to create the Fourth Reich.
Hunters stars Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, Lena Olin, Jerrika Hinton, Carol Kane, Josh Radnor, and more. It ran for two seasons and earned a 68% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. The series was created by David Weil, who is also known for Citadel and The Twilight Zone reboot.
Cross
Cross is a 2024 crime action thriller on Prime Video based on the bestselling novels by James Patterson, starring Aldis Hodge as a police detective, Alex Cross. Cross earned a solid 76% Rotten Tomatoes score for its first season and has another season on the way, which is expected to be released in late 2025.
Cross is set up to be another Reacher-like series for Prime Video, with more than 32 books of source material to back it up. The series also stars Jennifer Wigmore, Isiah Mustafa, Juanita Jennings, Alona Tal, and Samantha Walkes. Fans mostly agree that Cross is a stellar adaptation of the acclaimed book series.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is a prequel to J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. Despite receiving poor ratings from viewers, the series is still critically acclaimed and has earned an 84% Rotten Tomatoes score for its two seasons, while also receiving 7 total Emmy nominations.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is expected to have as many as five total seasons, with season 3 set to be released in late 2025 or early 2026. The series is famously Prime Video’s most expensive ever made, with the total production cost of season 1 reported to be around $465 million, which equates to roughly $58 million per episode.
Billy The Kid
Billy the Kid offers an immersive deep dive into the origin story of one of the most notorious outlaws of the American Old West. The series stars Tom Blyth as the titular antihero protagonist, who was born as Henry McCarty before he took on the alias William H. Bonney.
Billy the Kid expertly combines elements of the action and Western genres and often feels like classic John Wayne movies with its landscape cinematography and gunfight scenes. Only season 1 of Billy the Kid is currently streaming on Prime Video, but those with an MGM+ subscription can catch up on season 2 before season 3 releases in late September 2025.
Butterfly
Butterfly is a new action spy thriller series on Prime Video starring Daniel Dae Kim as the former intelligence operative protagonist David Jung. At just 6 episodes, Butterfly is one of the easiest action shows on Prime Video to binge-watch over the course of a weekend.
Butterfly received a 69% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics but a better audience score of 83%. Collider gave it an 8/10, noting, “Butterfly may not be the mind-blowing spy thriller you expect when you first turn it on, but it’ll win you over with its heart.”

The Wheel of Time ended on a series high note earlier this year, with season 3 receiving a 97% RT score. Batman: The Animated Series
Batman: The Animated Series is not an original Amazon show, but it is one of the best action series streaming on Prime Video. All four seasons of Batman: The Animated Series are exclusively available on Prime Video, while HBO Max only has the first three seasons.
Batman: The Animated Series premiered in 1992 and concluded in 1995, making it a very nostalgic watch for millennials. It features Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker. The series has a rare 9.0 rating on IMDb and ranks #25 on its Top 250 TV Shows of all time list.
