The Westies Will Be Titus Welliver’s New Sons Of Anarchy Replacement

It has been over a decade since Titus Welliver appeared in Sons of Anarchy, and, finally, after all these years, it looks like he has the perfect replacement for the show. The replacement in question is an upcoming series that is a highly anticipated crime drama scheduled to be released on MGM+.

Titus Welliver is best known for his portrayal of Harry Bosch in the long-running TV series. However, viewers familiar with his line of work would also know that he briefly appeared in Sons of Anarchy as Jimmy O’Phelan. Although he only showed up in a little over 10 episodes, his character remains memorable even to this day.

Jimmy made his debut in Sons of Anarchy‘s season 2 as the face of the True IRA and kept making appearances till season 3’s finale before meeting his doom. Titus Welliver’s run as Jimmy was short-lived, but his next show might be the perfect replacement for Sons of Anarchy in more ways than one.

Sons of Anarchy primarily revolves around the layered power struggles between multiple gangs and also finds real-life inspiration from the Hells Angels motorcycle club. The upcoming MGM+ show, The Westies, which will feature Titus Welliver in the leading role, will also follow the true story of the titular Irish-American gang that reigned supreme in Hell’s Kitchen in the 1980s.

With J.K. Simmons and Titus Welliver as its leads, The Westies, like Sons of Anarchy, will also explore themes of brotherhood and moral corruption by walking through the story of two men who grew up together but chose alternate paths in life. While one became a police officer, the other chose to join the titular Westies gang.

The friend-or-enemy dynamic between the two main characters in the series will seemingly be reminiscent of how many characters from Sons of Anarchy, like Charlie Hunnam’s Jax Teller, felt torn between their lives as outlaws and responsibilities towards their families. All in all, The Westies, like SOA, will immerse viewers in the morally complex and violent world of criminal gangs.

Titus Welliver was more of a villain in Sons of Anarchy as Jimmy, who stood as a leading figure for the True IRA group. During his brief stay in the series, Jimmy even brutally kills several characters before passing away himself. In The Westies, in contrast, Welliver will portray an NYPD officer, Glenn Keenan.

Comparing his new role in The Westies to Harry Bosch (via Collider), Titus Welliver revealed that “this is a very, very complex and deeply nuanced character, in the same way that Bosch was. But this is a very, very dark world.

Despite being on the other side of the law, however, Titus Welliver’s Glenn Keenan in The Westies will be nothing like Harry Bosch. As the actor confirmed, Keenan is a corrupt cop whose “moral compass has been completely compromised.” This makes the new Titus Welliver character a unique combination of some of his most iconic roles from shows like Sons of Anarchy and Bosch.
