The Walking Dead’s Daryl and Carol Reveal Relationship Status
Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 3, episode 4!The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon stars Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride clarify Daryl and Carol’s relationship status after season 3’s latest episode. During Daryl Dixon season 3, episode 4, Valentina makes the assumption that the core duo are romantically involved. However, both deny it in a somewhat comedic moment about their deep, long-standing connection to one another.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Reedus and McBride clarified the truth behind Daryl and Carol’s relationship in The Walking Dead. The actors explained how their characters aren’t in a romantic relationship, the scene reflecting fan expectations given how close they are. However, McBride cheekily adds it’s “still a little ambiguous” how true their denial is. Check out what they said below:
Melissa McBride: It’s kind of a big move on [showrunner] David Zabel’s part to bring that up in some way or another. It’s fodder for all kinds of things online.
Norman Reedus: We’ve never implied that we were a couple in 16 years. You have fans who just want to see this one thing, and if you give it to them, it’s done forever. We’ve really tried our hardest to take this show and make it original and make it less about zombie jump scares and who’s going to hook up with who. You can’t really write for YouTube comments. You just can’t. There are also other YouTube comments that are like, ‘When’s Daryl gonna find Rick?’ Like, I don’t know! But if I knew, I wouldn’t tell you!
That character of Valentina, she’s very sexually free. She assumes everybody’s hooking up…. It was fun to play that. I wanted to be lighthearted with it, but I wanted to definitely have an exclamation point.
Melissa McBride: I think we both got a kick out of that scene, and I think it was handled well. It was light, it was fun, it was unexpected. And still, if I may say, there’s something still a little ambiguous about it.
What Daryl & Carol’s Relationship Clarification Means For The Pair
Daryl and Carol have always been a dynamic duo within The Walking Dead universe. Following the death of Carol’s daughter, Sophia, the pair grew close. However, they never entered a romantic relationship. Instead, Carol became involved with Tobin in season 6 and Ezekiel in season 9, while Daryl fell for Leah during season 10 and Isabelle in Daryl Dixon.
As of now, the core Daryl Dixon characters seem unlikely to become romantically involved anytime soon. Sparks seem to be flying between Carol and Antonio, while Daryl has been maintaining a distance from romance since Isabelle died. The actors’ clarification emphasizes how, despite how close the duo are, romance doesn’t seem very likely in the near future.
However, McBride keeps some hope alive by pointing out the ambiguity of their conversation with Valentina. Love clearly isn’t at the forefront of either of their minds, but given their closeness, it’s also not an impossible development should events ever settle down. But their current denial make it seem like Daryl Dixon season 3’s episodes won’t see such an evolution.
Our Take On Daryl & Carol’s Relationship In The Walking Dead
McBride’s statement keeps the door open, while Reedus’ discussion of fan expectations indicates it’s not in the cards. However, the lack of romance between Daryl and Carol is made up for by the much deeper bond the pair share. They love each other, but it’s a love that goes beyond the romantic because of how much they’ve been through together.
With the duo’s travels across Spain continuing for quite some time, Daryl Dixon could bring up the possibility of a romantic bond between the two later. However, the care they feel for each other doesn’t seem to fully encapsulate romance, making it unlikely they’re ever going to become bonded in that way. The door remains propped open nonetheless.
