The Underrated Horror Show I Can’t Believe I Didn’t Watch Sooner

Now one of my favorite ongoing series, my dad recommended From to me long before it became known as one of TV’s best horror shows. It may be surprising, but since I was a teen I’ve almost always trusted my parents’ TV recommendations. That’s especially been the case with my dad in regards to horror and mystery shows, with series like Lost, The Walking Dead, and American Horror Story being among those we most often discuss.

However, he’s also had a knack for finding great new horror series before they become more widespread hits. More recently, he recommended a horror sci-fi mystery show from Lost’s executive producers back in 2022. After raving about the show, it still took me another year before I finally sat down and caught up on it. Now, three years later, it’s one of the most exciting horror shows on TV.

Back when it was still airing under Epix rather than MGM+, my dad raved to me about this great new show he was watching called From. It sounded a lot like a more horror-centric version of Lost, which still isn’t an inaccurate description of the show after three seasons. Not to mention, From’s cast was led by Lost star Harold Perrineau.

As enticing as that description was, it took me way too long to come around to From. Ultimately, it wasn’t until just a few episodes before From‘s season 2 finale that I realized it was time to finally watch the entire first season and experience the remainder of the season live. I ended up binge-watching the series in about a week, and I was devastated when I realized I’d have to wait another year for season 3.

Thinking back, I’m still disappointed in myself for taking so long after that initial recommendation to watch it. A high-quality, well-written, emotionally-driven horror that stays consistent across each season, From is the exact kind of mystery box TV show that we need more of today.

Though From’s biggest mysteries prove deeper and more complex as they’re unraveled, they hark back to the genius twists and turns that helped make Lost such a massive phenomenon back in the 2000s. With MGM+ being a smaller streaming service compared to the Goliaths like Netflix, Prime Video, and Hulu/Disney+, what began as a hidden gem horror series has gradually become a much bigger hit.

After His Recommendation, From Gained A Reputation As One Of TV’s Best Ongoing Horror Series

I have to give props to my dad for that recommendation – he caught onto the promising nature of From long before it enjoyed more mainstream popularity. As the current sci-fi horror TV landscape continues to expand with Stranger Things, Alien: Earth, Revival, The Last of Us, Stephen King adaptations like The Institute, and the many Walking Dead spinoffs, From remains one of the best of those ongoing series.

It’s unclear how much longer the series will continue after From season 4, but MGM+’s hit horror will hopefully maintain its revered reputation throughout the entirety of its run. While it’s not traditional “Dad TV,” From, for me, turned out to be a great reminder of why you should listen to your parents more when recommending new hidden gem TV shows.
