The Day Of The Jackal Season 2: New Writer, Fresh Direction

The Day of the Jackal season 2 is set for a major shakeup with filming just on the horizon. The Eddie Redmayne-fronted spy thriller is an adaptation of Frederick Forsyth’s novel of the same name, which was adapted into the 1973 movie, The Day of the Jackal, and a controversial “inspired-by” 1997 US remake, The Jackal, starring Bruce Willis.

The show was released on Peacock on September 7, 2024, and follows the titular Jackal, a legendary British assassin, and an intelligence officer’s attempts to capture him. The Day of the Jackal season 1’s ending set the show up perfectly for season 2, and there could be a big change in the tone and direction of the season, with a huge change set to take place.

Per Variety, The Day of the Jackal has secured a brand-new writer for season 2, with David Harrower taking the reins, as creator and showrunner Ronan Bennett is set to step back. Harrower is best-known for his work on the critically-acclaimed Lockerbie: A Search for the Truth, and will arrive as head writer, with Bennett set to remain as executive producer.

What This Means For The Day Of The Jackal Season 2

The switch is bound to have an impact on the tone and creative direction of The Day of the Jackal, and this will no doubt be noticeable throughout season 2. However, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing, and Harrower has a proven track record of writing immersive, quality, and critically-acclaimed TV, making him a great choice for Jackal.

The Day of the Jackal season 2 will have a lot to live up to after a stellar first season, and it is important for the show to hit the ground running, and establish what it wants to say right off the bat. Harrower may take a different approach to the source material, and it will be fascinating to see how his and Bennett’s visions contrast with one another.

There is no doubt that the first season of the show was a big success, and The Day of the Jackal‘s cast and characters have played a big role in this. If Harrower can add his own magic to the success that has come before, there is no reason why the show cannot be elevated in its sophomore season, and possibly even outshine its debut season.

The creative transition for the show will no doubt be felt, but that could actually work in its favor, and there is no reason Bennett cannot return for later seasons. How long The Day of the Jackal is set to run is unclear, but a new writer should keep things fresh and exciting, and there will be hope that the show can be even more thrilling this time around.
