Superman Passes Logan At The Worldwide Box Office

Superman has soared even higher up a major box office chart. The James Gunn-directed movie, which debuted on July 11, stars David Corenswet as the titular character. It is the first theatrical installment in the DC Universe, a superhero franchise that is a soft reboot of the DC Extended Universe, which previously starred Henry Cavill in the role.

2025’s Superman is already the seventh highest-grossing movie of 2025 at the time of writing as well as the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year. While Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps got the closest, the Gunn movie managed to outgross it, as well as its predecessors Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World.

Per The Numbers, as of Thursday, Superman has hit a cumulative worldwide box office total of $614.4 million before the end of its ninth full week in theaters. This total comprises $353.5 million from the domestic box office and an additional $260.9 million from international markets.

By hitting that total, Superman has managed to soar further up the chart of the highest-grossing superhero movies of all time. It has just skirted past the $614.2 million haul of the 2017 X-Men spinoff movie Logan to hit No. 48.

What This Means For Superman

This chart placement cements Superman‘s dominance over 2025 superhero movies, as well as the majority of the DCEU movies. In fact, the only theatrical titles among the 15 movies from the previous iteration of the franchise that lie above it on the all-time chart are Justice League, Man of Steel, Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman, Batman v Superman, and Aquaman.

It is also the 10th highest-grossing DC superhero movie overall on the chart, additionally falling behind The Batman, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises. 2019’s billion-dollar movie Joker is not on the chart because it technically follows a DC villain, not a hero.

However, in spite of its success among its contemporaries, Superman does not seem to have a chance of reaching the Top 20 superhero movies of all time. The current No. 20 title is Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which hit a total that is more than $250 million higher than Superman‘s current worldwide haul.

Because Superman is already available for purchase and rental on video on demand, it seems unlikely that its theatrical run has enough momentum left for it to reach that high.

Regardless of its performance compared to other superhero movies, the James Gunn project is a solid success. The reported budget of Superman is $225 million, which means the movie probably only needed to hit a maximum of $562.5 million in order to break even in theaters.
