Sullivan’s Crossing Cast Changes Proves The Show’s New Direction
Sullivan’s Crossing season 4 may still be in the works, but after some surprising casting news, it’s clear that the series is headed in an unsettling new direction. Sullivan’s Crossing, based on the book series by Robyn Carr, has taken its liberties as its moved away from the source material, embracing some of the cozy melodrama that’s succeeded for shows like Virgin River.
Sullivan’s Crossing season 4 already knows it’s facing a challenge after the cliffhanger that left fans reeling post-finale. At the end of the season 3 finale, fans discovered that Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) had been keeping a secret throughout her time at the Crossing when a man who claimed to be her husband reappeared in her life at the worst possible time.
After Maggie and California “Cal” Jones (Chad Michal Murray) had finally sorted their relationship out from the season’s angst, seeing Liam Davies (Marcus Rosner) again was hardly what fans were expecting. While Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 had worked hard to stir up drama between Maggie and Cal, the resolution felt like a safe bet until Liam arrived in Timberlake.
While Liam’s arc presents a strange new obstacle for Sullivan’s Crossing to tackle next season, news of another wave of new cast members was surprising for the show’s fans. Though diversifying the cast is always an interesting endeavor, Sullivan’s Crossing bringing another group of cast members into the mix proves the show is moving in a different direction than originally intended.
Sullivan’s Crossing Has Added Several New Cast Members In Season 4
As Sullivan’s Crossing moves into a whole new season, the series will find itself with a group of new cast members to ingratiate into the series. Along with Rosner, four new actors have been cast on the show according to Deadline. Joining Rosner will be Fuad Ahmed, Jonathan Silverman, Colby Frost, and Emerson MacNeil, all joining Sullivan’s Crossing as series regulars.
While Rosner’s Liam will be impacting Maggie’s story, it appears Cal will be dealing with a new role outside of his romantic relationship. Frost and MacNeil will play siblings Ben and Tracy Nelson, who are part of Lola Gunderson’s (Amalia Williamson) newfound youth group. While Ben works with the group and Tracy is a part of it, Cal will seemingly leave a mark on their lives.
Ahmed will be impacting a whole different side of the Sullivan’s Crossing story, coming into the mix as Amir Malik, a charming talented chef who’s visiting Timberlake to see his old friend Rob Shandon (Reid Pierce). As Rob’s renovated restaurant has brought Sydney Shandon (Lindura) back into the fold, Amir may cause a rift between the siblings in season 4.
Finally, Silverman joins Sullivan’s Crossing season 4 as Quincy Carlson, a difficult camper staying at the Crossing who seems to open Maggie’s eyes to new possibilities. While it’s unclear if Sullivan’s Crossing will be swapping out the stories of other characters like Frank “Sully” Sullivan (Scott Patterson) for fresh faces, there’s a lot of change coming to the popular series.
Sullivan’s Crossing’s New Art Appears To Hint At A Love Triangle For Maggie
With Liam becoming a big part of Sullivan’s Crossing as it moves into its next season, it’s become clear that while the series has pursued a love triangle in the past, it’s going all in on the idea of Maggie having to choose between Cal and Liam. Despite the way that Maggie’s original triangle with Andrew Matthews (Allan Hawco) flopped, the show is returning to the format.
While Sullivan’s Crossing season 3 proved that the relationship between Cal and Maggie was deeply flawed, the series tried to make it clear that the pair would work things out in the end. Now, with the addition of Maggie’s husband and some new key art for the show, it’s possible the original endgame couple may not be the end result.
While Sullivan’s Crossing Needed To Expand Its Storytelling, The New Angle May Not Work
Although Sullivan’s Crossing has needed to expand its storytelling for the past two seasons, the series has made a leap that appears to be too large. Despite Sully and Frank & Edna Cranebear (Tom Jackson & Andrea Menard) all leaving the season a bit open-ended about what was to come, bringing in a slew of new characters was never the expectation.
Sullivan’s Crossing has made the decision to move forward with a group of new cast members who may be the best fit for the show, but the storytelling may not work with the way the series has been explained in the past. Sullivan’s Crossing has a distinct style, and bringing more drama into the mix may not be the best move.
Although Sullivan’s Crossing has always had melodrama in its storytelling style, the series has been more focused on building relationships an emphasizing community. Rather than focusing on building out new stories that encapsulate the Sullivan’s Crossing brand, it appears the show is shifting gears entirely with new characters and different stories to entice viewers of similarly styled, sometimes over dramatic series.
