Sigourney Weaver Shares Thoughts on Alien: Earth TV Series
Sigourney Weaver reveals that she is watching Alien: Earth and shares her thoughts on the show. Weaver famously played Ellen Ripley in the original Alien movie released in 1979, and returned for Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien: Resurrection as well.
The popular science-fiction franchise has continued to expand over the years, and the latest installment is a television series. Reviews for Alien: Earth have been incredibly positive, with the series being praised for adding nuance to the franchise in thrilling fashion.
While speaking with Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival about her new film Dust Bunny, Weaver was asked to recommend a television show that she has watched recently, to which she replied, “Alien: Earth. Noah Hawley.”
She shared that she was already a fan of the showrunner’s work because of Fargo, but what she likes best about his new series is its themes and how it goes far beyond the scope of what the Alien franchise has done in the past. Weaver also emphasizes that “I can’t believe it’s television.” Check out her full comments below:
“What I admire about it is it’s not Alien-centric. It is about what world we will be living in in 100 years. I think the scope of it is so much bigger than an Alien project. Fascinating. Much more about our world, what’s going to be happening to it, what’s going to be important, the role of greed. It’s just exploded some of the themes that have always been part of the Alien series, and I think it’s beautifully cast and beautifully done. I can’t believe it’s television, frankly.”
What This Means For Alien: Earth
As the original protagonist and human face of the franchise, Weaver has a unique understanding and history of the Alien universe. As important as the critical acclaim and overwhelmingly positive audience response to the show are, Weaver’s praise is arguably even more meaningful.
Her comments are made more genuine by the fact that she was not asked about Alien: Earth in the first place and brought it up on her own. She could have mentioned any show that she has watched recently, and she decided to highlight the one that she believes is unparalleled.
Between the relevant themes that are consistent with the franchise’s history, Alien: Earth‘s cast, Hawley’s creative vision, and shifting the setting to Earth, the series is impressing Weaver on a scale she has never seen before despite her long career in the entertainment industry.
Alien: Earth has already been a major triumph for the franchise, and it just got even better thanks to Weaver’s resounding approval. She recognizes that what Hawley and his creative team have achieved is special and seems proud of how they are tackling themes she helped explore in previous stories.
Unlike some other franchise stars, who can become resentful when the stories continue without them, Weaver is happy to simply watch and enjoy Alien: Earth, and even wants to recommend it to others when she is promoting an entirely different project.
