Season 1 Hints at Horcrux Hunt for Dumbledore

Images from the set of HBO’s Harry Potter remake hint that the upcoming first season will feature a major Horcrux book change. Of course, there shouldn’t be any real mention of Horcruxes in season 1, since this installment is based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Still, the locations seen in these set images suggest that Dumbledore‘s search will at least be referenced.

The images in question have provided our first glimpse of John Lithgow in costume for the Harry Potter TV show. So far, he looks exactly the part. Tall with a nearly knee-length silver beard and extravagant robes, Lithgow’s Dumbledore will be absolutely perfect for the new Harry Potter series. What’s peculiar, however, is that Dumbledore appears to be at the beach in these images.

It’s curious that Dumbledore would be at the beach in Harry Potter season 1, since there was never such a scene described in the Philosopher’s Stone book. In the whole series, Dumbledore was only seen at the seaside in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, when he and Harry went looking for a Horcrux. Of course, this moment won’t happen for another five in-story years.

Though Harry Potter season 1 could be adding a random beach scene for Lithgow’s Dumbledore, the coming episodes may show Dumbledore’s first visit to the cave where Voldemort hid Slytherin’s locket. The show wouldn’t necessarily explain what he is doing there (first-time audiences can’t know about Horcruxes yet), but Harry Potter veterans would recognize that Dumbledore is exploring locations from the Dark Lord’s past.

Seeing Dumbledore at the cave by the sea in Harry Potter season 1 would come with some interesting implications. The headmaster made it seem as if his visit with Harry was his first, but it’s certainly possible that he had checked the place out years before. This could have happened as far back as when Voldemort first fell. After all, Tom Riddle told Dumbledore about the cave when he was still just a child.

Even if the Harry Potter TV show didn’t explain what Dumbledore was doing at the ocean cave (which it absolutely should not do), including this scene would be an intriguing nod to those who know where the story is headed. Additionally, it will be interesting to see things from Dumbledore’s perspective, since we know he was pulling a lot of strings in the background.

There Are Other Possible Explanations For Harry Potter Season 1’s Dumbledore Scenes

Even if the scenes teased by the Harry Potter set images aren’t meant to be the early stages of Dumbledore’s Horcrux hunt, they imply that we will get some additional scenes from the headmaster’s perspective. Other set images include a character that looks like he could be Nicholas Flamel, so perhaps the beach is simply a location for Dumbledore to rendezvous with an old friend.

It’s expected that the remake will take a total of 10 years from start to finish, which means that Lithgow will be in his late 80s while filming season 6.

Another somewhat likely possibility is that HBO is getting ahead of itself and filming scenes from further along in the story of Harry Potter. It’s expected that the remake will take a total of 10 years from start to finish, which means that Lithgow will be in his late 80s while filming season 6. It would be smart if the Harry Potter remake filmed some of the actors’ scenes ahead of time, especially those that require more action from Dumbledore’s character.

We know from the Harry Potter movies that Dumbledore is a risky character to cast. Richard Harris passed away while the films were still in progress, making it necessary to bring in Michael Gambon to replace him. It would make sense that HBO would want to avoid this issue entirely, and modern technology makes it completely possible. Therefore, it could still be years before we see the scene teased in the Harry Potter set images on screen.
