Although Saturday Night Live season 51 might feature some surprising cast exits, the comedy show has kept two stars who enjoy an almost unprecedented run on the series. Saturday Night Live has been on the air for decades, with the variety show celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025.

That said, the show has only been able to produce such a bevy of stars due to its near-constant staff turnover. Saturday Night Live changes its lineup every year, dropping some performers and introducing new replacements for them. Saturday Night Live’s recent exits prove season 51 is no different.
Devon Walker, Heidi Gardner, Emil Wakim, and Michael Longfellow all exited the series before October 4’s season 51 premiere, leading to much surprise from long-time viewers. However, a pair of stars who hold a particularly prominent role in the show remain in place.
Despite what some online rumors speculated, Michael Che and Colin Jost are still hosting Weekend Update and remain part of Saturday Night Live’s roster for season 51. Two of the most famous Weekend Update hosts ever, Jost and Che have split the role since 2014.

While Che became Jost’s Weekend Update co-anchor only one year after joining Saturday Night Live in 2013, Jost has a much longer history with the series. Jost was first hired by Saturday Night Live in 2005, working as a staff writer when he was only 23 years old.
Jost became the show’s writing supervisor by 2009 and, in 2013, he took over the Weekend Update segment from Seth Meyers as Meyers left to host Late Night with Seth Meyers. Since the late-night comedy landscape isn’t as healthy as it once was on network TV, it is not a shock that Jost has remained in the role for so long.
While earlier generations of Weekend Update hosts went on to host late-night talk shows of their own, Jost and Che have carved out a comfortable niche in this role. At a time when even an industry titan like Stephen Colbert can face sudden cancellation without much justification, it makes sense for the pair to stay a part of Saturday Night Live.
