Rick And Morty Creator’s New Netflix Comedy Scores 83% On RT
Haunted Hotel, the new animated Netflix comedy from the creator of Rick and Morty, is off to a solid start on Rotten Tomatoes. After a long run, the adventures of a very unlikely duo are still going strong. Rick & Morty season 8 is available to stream on HBO Max, with a spinoff spotlighting the President Curtis character on the way.
The team behind Rick and Mortyhas also helped to cultivate other projects over the years. That includes Haunted Hotel, which recently premiered on Netflix. Created by Matt Roller, with Rick and Morty and Community creator Dan Harmon among the executive producers, the ten-episode series is a horror comedy with a family twist.
With 6 reviews so far, Haunted Hotel has debuted to an impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes. It currently sits at 83%, with only one review that leans negative. The audience score is also identical, coming in at 83%, although the numbers are not final and will fluctuate as more reviews and ratings are added.
What Haunted Hotel Means For Rick & Morty Fans
Roller, a writer on Rick and Morty, turns the dial to a different genre with Haunted Hotel. It focuses on a single mother of two (voiced by Eliza Coupe) who struggles to manage the haunted Undervale hotel. She has help from her estranged brother, now one of the ghosts himself and able to pass along ideas from his fellow spirits.
Along with Coupe, recognized for her roles in Scrubs and Happy Endings, the Haunted Hotel cast includes Will Forte (SNL), Skyler Gisondo (James Gunn’s Superman), Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), and veteran voice actor Natalie Palamides. It’s similarly accomplished behind the camera, with Roller’s previous credits also including The Goldbergs and Community.
Assessments of Haunted Hotel note the fact that, in some ways, it is a love letter to horror. Fans of the resilient and evolving genre will notice plenty of references and Easter eggs. In a review for ScreenRant, Abigail Stevens was more mixed on the show overall but noted that it’s “entertaining enough television for Halloween.”
Our Take On Haunted Hotel
Haunted Hotel led to a bit of a bidding war. It is especially easy to recommend to horror lovers. But even just for fans of good adult animation, the team behind Rick and Morty should ensure that the new Netflix show is at least worth sampling for a few episodes in order to figure out whether it has a formula that works.
