Resurrection Redeems New Blood’s Controversial Ending
Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 10.The finale of Dexter: Resurrection season 1 included a huge reference to one of the most controversial moments in Dexter: New Blood. The ending of Resurrection season 1 was much more positive than the ending of New Blood. Dexter survived, his relationship with Harrison is still solid, and there are still plenty of adventures for him to go on in Resurrection season 2.
Resurrection didn’t get to a happier ending than New Blood by completely ignoring it, though. In fact, one of the best parts about Resurrection season 1’s ending was how it took the most controversial moment from New Blood and flipped it on its head. That moment helped Dexter move on, and it almost guarantees Resurrection will never be as divisive again.
Dexter References His New Blood “Death” Scene As A Signal For Harrison To Knock Out Prater
In Dexter: Resurrection episode 10, when Leon Prater had Harrison hostage, Dexter subtly signaled for him to take Prater down. Dexter referenced the “protection” (M99) he gave Harrison for Gigi’s house, but more importantly, Dexter tapped on his heart the same way he did when he asked Harrison to shoot him at the end of New Blood.
To New Blood viewers and Harrison himself, Dexter tapping his heart was a clear sign for Harrison to take action. It was Dexter’s coded way of asking Harrison to do something, and it was a reference Prater wouldn’t recognize as being directed towards Harrison. Once that was in place, Dexter’s mention of “protection” took on a very clear meaning, and Harrison took Prater down.
Dexter: Resurrection’s Callback Helps Reassure It Won’t Repeat New Blood’s Controversial Ending
Dexter: Resurrection‘s callback to Dexter’s “death” scene wasn’t just a reference to New Blood; it was also a message to the audience that the franchise won’t try to recreate New Blood‘s ending again. Just after Dexter referenced New Blood, Harrison said “That better be the last time you tell someone to shoot you in the chest,” and Resurrection is probably going to listen to him.
After dealing with Prater, Dexter and Harrison’s relationship is at the best it has ever been. They’ve both put themselves in danger helping one another and Harrison clearly accepts his dad’s dark passenger and has made peace with it to have a father figure in his life. Dexter may die at the end of Resurrection, but he’s not going to ask Harrison to kill him again.

Resurrection episode 10’s decision to completely flip New Blood‘s ending into a positive moment basically guarantees that. Both symbolically and literally, Dexter and Harrison have moved on from that moment in Iron Lake. They’re not the same anymore, and Harrison won’t kill his dad. Dexter: Resurrection also probably won’t risk another ending as controversial as New Blood‘s.
