Renewal Confirmed, Story, & Cast Details

Following Foundation season 3, here’s what we know about the show’s continuation. Based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation novels, Apple TV+’s grand-scale sci-fi series has become a major success for the streamer, achieving critical acclaim in its third season.

To adapt Isaac Asimov’s full Foundation universe, the show would require multiple seasons and some spinoffs. Following Foundation season 3, there’s plenty of story still to tell, and Apple and other creatives involved have shared some information on where things might be headed.

Foundation season 4 is confirmed to be in development with Apple TV+, lead co-showrunners Ian Goldberg and David Kob. The pair took over the series following creator David S. Goyer’s departure ahead of season 3, and have done a successful job landing the critically acclaimed third season.

Despite Goyer’s leave as showrunner, he was still involved in season 3 as a writer and executive producer. This will not be the case going forward, as Goyer cited the show’s production in Europe as the main reason, stating that it forced him to be away from his family for too long. He claimed other writers and directors would also no longer be involved.

This could result in a change for the show’s overall roadmap, as Goyer shared he wasn’t sure if the new showrunners would follow his plan. There are storylines from Foundation season 3’s ending that will carry over, but beyond that, it’s difficult to say what the show will look like, and how it will feel in his absence.

Fans of the sci-fi drama are in luck, as Apple went ahead and renewed Foundation for season 4 prior to the season 3 finale. Co-showrunners and executive producers Ian Goldberg and David Kob confirmed the renewal, sharing, “There is no series quite like ‘Foundation’ and we feel lucky and honored to be carrying the torch forward as co-showrunners into season four.”

If there’s any pair who could replace David S. Goyer, it’s Goldberg and Kob, who previously worked with Goyer on the series Krypton. Their credits also include Fear the Walking Dead, Once Upon a Time, and The Flash, among other films and TV shows.

Foundation season 4’s cast is up in the air after season 3’s dramatic climax. Lou Llobell is the safest assumption for a returning star, as her character, Gaal Dornick, will continue to be the leading protagonist in season 4. As for the rest of the cast, it will be interesting to see how the new season handles their characters.

Lee Pace, Laura Birn, and Jared Harris are fan favorites in the series, but their characters Brother Day, Demerzel, and Hari Seldon, all saw seemingly conclusive ends to their stories. Still, it’s doubtful that the show would kill off its two top-billed actors, whose names have been the show’s marquee. Foundation has a way of bringing back characters.

Supporting cast members who will likely return are Terrance Mann as Brother Dusk, Cassian Bilton as Brother Dawn, Synnøve Karlsen as Bayta Mallow, Cody Fern as Toran Mallow, Tómas Lemarquis as Magnifico Giganticus, Troy Kotsur as Preem Palver, Brandon P. Bell as Han Pritcher, and Rowena King as Kalle.

Foundation Season 4 Story Details

Bayta in Foundation

Foundation season 4’s story looks like it will be based on the novel Second Foundation, which will conclude Asimov’s main Foundation trilogy. Seasons 2 and 3 covered the second book, Foundation and Empire, splitting up the book’s two parts. It’s unclear if the series will do the same with Second Foundation.

There are, of course, plenty of other stories happening in the show that aren’t in the novels. Brother Dusk has taken over as Empire, killing the other Cleon clones, Demerzel, and claiming the throne with the Novacula and the Prime Radiant as his weapons.

Gaal was able to fight the Mule long enough to escape, but she still wasn’t powerful enough to defeat Bayta. She did, however, secure the Second Foundation a new home as Bayta’s control of Han Pritcher put the location of Ignis in jeopardy. There’s plenty of material in Asimov’s other books, like the Robot series, for Foundation to begin incorporating.
