Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Peacemaker season 2, episode 6!James Gunn has explained how Peacemaker season 2’s major Superman cameo impacts the whole DCU. During the events of Peacemaker season 2, episode 6, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) arrives at Belle Reeve Prison, visiting Lex Luthor (Nicholas Holt). He wants to cut a deal with the former LuthorCorp CEO in his quest for revenge against Chris (John Cena).
Speaking on HBO Max‘s Peacemaker: The Official Podcast, Gunn explained how Luthor’s cameo in season 2 is a massive moment for the DCU. Having shot the scene during Superman‘s production, Gunn unpacked how Rick’s deal with Lex to move him from Bell Reve to Van Knull is a “scary” development as he seeks out where Peacemaker’s portal might be:
This is one of the first things we shot. We shot it in the middle of Superman, while we were shooting the Pentagon scenes in Superman. It was weird because tonally, it instantly felt different from Superman, which is so big and brash, and this show is so strangely grounded and gritty. I felt like even Nick’s performance was different. So, we have a really important moment, for not only Peacemaker but the entire DCU. Rick Flag, the Head of A.R.G.U.S., strikes a deal basically with Lex Luthor in exchange for [him] finding where Peacemaker’s portal might be. He is going to move him from a prison with metahumans to a prison with no metahumans. From Belle Reve, where they are now, to Van Kull. Then he leaves and tells Sol, Sasha Bordeaux, that he’s teamed up with Lex Luthor, which is scary. A man with such power as Flag, who’s got an agenda, it’s scary for our boy, Peacemaker. By the way, that scene with Lex Luthor was originally going to appear in episode 7. That is the other thing I moved, besides the opening of 2 and 4, which I switched around. The reason being that the next scene was so serious and heavy that I needed an in-between scene. Luckily, I had shot both of them, so it wasn’t a weird directing thing to steal a scene from the next episode.
More to come…
