Peacemaker Season 2 Reveals Flaw in Lex Luthor’s Superman Plan

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Peacemaker season 2, episode 7Thanks to the DCU’s latest release with Peacemaker season 2, James Gunn has doubled down on a key reason why Lex Luthor’s Superman plan failed. Orchestrating a major scheme to kill Superman with the government’s backing (while secretly supporting Boravia’s invasion of Jarhanpur), Luthor’s master scheme was undone, particularly when it came to one major piece of his plot.

In Superman, Luthor replicated the Big Bang to create his own pocket universe, accessed through interdimensional portals. The dangers were indeed shown in Superman when the portals were overloaded, creating a rift that split Metropolis in two in Superman’s ending. Now, Peacemaker season 2 has added some new context, confirming just how flawed Luthor’s portals actually were in Superman.

Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 7 Features ARGUS Working With LuthorCorp Sydney Happersen

Following a major appearance by Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor in Peacemaker season 2, who cut a deal with Rick Flag Sr., Peacemaker season 2, episode 7 sees ARGUS working with LuthorCorp’s Sydney Happersen (Stephen Blackehart), Lex’s expert on extradimensional rifts and pocket universes.

Using the flying LuthorCorp communications hub first seen in Superman, Happersen runs a scan to find Peacemaker’s similar Quantum Unfolding Chamber. Remarkably, Happersen finds Chris Smith’s cabin and portal within seconds. The reason why the QUC was so easy to find proves the inherent problem with Lex Luthor’s pocket universe and portals: wobbles.

Despite Lex’s successful creation of a pocket universe, Sydney tells Rick Flag that the LuthorCorp portals always had a “wobble” on scans due to their inherent instability (hence the devastating rifts when opened too long). Coverversly, Happersen confirms Peacemaker’s QUC is perfectly stable.

In Superman, the Justice Gang’s Mister Terrific cited just how dangerous Lex Luthor’s creation of a pocket universe was, confirming that a black hole could have been created to swallow the Earth whole had the supergenius been just a picometer off in his calculations.

Ultimately, Luthor intentionally kept a portal open to create a devastating rift between the universes, forcing Superman to return to Metropolis as circumstances and stakes had risen beyond his control and initial calculations. Luthor’s incredibly brash and ill-advised choice led not only to his defeat, but also to his public exposure (like his alliance with Boravia).

Caught up in his own pride and ego, Luthor wrongly chose to take advantage of what Peacemaker season 2 confirms was always an inherent weakness in his pocket universe, which in turn largely contributed to his defeat.

One can also imagine that Luthor’s xenophobia would only increase were he to learn that one of his most brilliant scientific creations is ultimately inferior to the QUC, which Peacemaker season 2 previously revealed was created by extraterrestrials.

At any rate, a far more stable pocket universe with access to other dimensions has Rick Flag Sr. very excited, and the promo for Peacemaker season 2’s finale teases his plans to use the QUC now that it’s in ARGUS custody (shown in Peacemaker season 2, episode 7’s ending).

Without a doubt, it’s going to be fascinating to see what may be discovered before Peacemaker season 2 reaches its end.

The finale of Peacemaker season 2 releases on October 9th, streaming on HBO Max.
