Organ Child Becomes A Netflix Hit On Streaming Chart

Organ Child is surging on streaming. The new action release, which is now on Netflix after debuting in Taiwan in April, is reminiscent of the Taken movies, as it follows Zhang Qi-Mao (Joseph Chang Hsiao-chuan), a man who seeks revenge after being framed for the kidnapping of his daughter, who he later finds out had her organs sold on the black market.

Netflix has now calculated their Top 10 chart of the most-watched non-English movies for the week of September 29 through October 5. Organ Child shot to No. 3 during its debut week with 3.4 million viewers accumulating a total of 6.1 million viewing hours.

The No. 3 movie on the English-language chart, Karate Kid: Legends, hit a similar level, with 3.9 million viewers and 6.1 million viewing hours.

Organ Child, which was directed by Shiue Bin Jian (Do You Love Me As I Love You), was also in the Top 10 in 37 different individual regions across the globe, though it was only No. 1 in two of them. Those would be Hong Kong and its home territory of Taiwan.

The only titles above it on the Top 10 chart are French Lover (No. 2), the hit new romantic comedy starring Omar Sy, and Mantis (No. 1), a South Korean assassin action-thriller that reunites Squid Game stars Im Si-wan and Park Gyu-young, who both appeared in seasons 2 and 3 of the flagship survival series.

Not only is Organ Child the highest-ranked debut title on Netflix during the week measured, it is the only debut title in the entire Top 10.

While quite a few movies on the chart (including Mantis, French Lover, Son of Sardaar 2, and Dhadak 2) are in their second weeks, the rest of the Top 10 has been charting for between three and eight weeks.

The eight-week title on the non-English Top 10 chart is the South Korean action movie Kill Boksoon (No. 8).

This level of success is intriguing considering the fact that Organ Child had a very low profile online ahead of its premiere on Netflix on September 30. Not only does it not have its own dedicated Wikipedia page, it does not have an official score on Rotten Tomatoes, because no RT-approved critics have reviewed it at the time of writing.

One thing that could explain the sudden success of the Netflix action movie is the fact that new releases often get a bump when they first arrive on Netflix and are displayed on the homepage of the streaming service.

However, if Organ Child continues to chart in the coming weeks and manages to retain a consistent or even increased audience, it may become yet another surprise hit from the streaming service, which recently had the not-necessarily anticipated animated movie KPop Demon Hunters surge to become its most-watched film of all time.
