Netflix’s Underrated Sci-Fi Series You Need to Watch
Netflix has one obscure but incredible sci-fi series that all fans of the genre should watch at least once. Unlike most Netflix sci-fi shows that barely get the opportunity to stick around beyond two seasons, the show in question managed to have a strong three-season run before it concluded its narrative with a well-rounded ending.
Almost all streaming services, including Netflix, continue to invest heavily in post-apocalyptic sci-fi shows because of their wide appeal. While Apple TV+ has some brilliant additions to the genre, like Silo and Invasion, Prime Video has Fallout and The Walking Dead‘s spin-offs and follow-ups.
Even Netflix has not held back from exploring a variety of post-apocalyptic and dystopian themes, with shows like 3%, Into the Night, and Snowpiercer. Unfortunately, in the long line of sci-fi shows that Netflix offers, there is one series that has been forgotten and deserves a lot more attention from sci-fi fans.
Netflix’s The Rain Is A Mix Of The Eternaut & Fallout
Unlike The Eternaut and Fallout, Netflix’s The Rain is neither based on a novel nor a video game. However, the Danish series seems to share many intriguing parallels with both shows. Like The Eternaut, The Rain begins with a disastrous climate condition, where a deadly virus spreads among humans through rainfall.
Although The Eternaut does not explicitly mention any virus outbreaks, its story also begins with many humans dying after coming in contact with radioactive snowfall. In both shows, the overarching enemy remains a mysterious force. Although The Rain avoids dabbling with the supernatural, its characters, like the ones in The Eternaut, race against time to find the truth about the central apocalypse.
Fallout fans, too, will find a sense of familiarity in The Rain, given how it follows the lives of a bunch of characters in a high-tech bunker after the toxic rain makes the outside world uninhabitable. Similar to the characters in Fallout, the ones in The Rain also eventually step out of their bunker to experience the terrors of the wasteland that the outside world has become.
The Rain Never Received The Attention It Deserved
The Rain lasted for three seasons, and, unlike many sci-fi shows in the streaming era, it was not abruptly canceled. Instead, it reached its natural conclusion and ended most of its story beats on a conclusive note. Unfortunately, despite earning critical acclaim and getting the chance to tell a well-rounded story, The Rain remains relatively obscure.
The Rain was Netflix’s first original series from Denmark.
Unlike other similar post-apocalyptic shows like The Eternaut, Silo, and Fallout, The Rain never became a mainstream hit. Given how it will be a while before Fallout, The Eternaut, and Silo will return with their next installments, viewers can fulfill their appetite for thought-provoking post-apocalyptic narratives by watching The Rain on Netflix.
