Netflix’s Underrated French Horror Gem With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Netflix has a wide variety of thriller and horror TV shows, and this underrated show with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score is its best horror show. Despite all the competition it now has, Netflix continues to be the biggest and most popular streaming platform out there – and, as such, it’s home to many great movies and TV shows.
Among them are many horror TV shows, with Mike Flanagan’s shows standing out as some of the best. However, the platform also has some hidden horror gems that have unfairly gone unnoticed, for different reasons. Such is the case for a French horror thriller that happens to have a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.
Marianne Is A Horror Masterpiece That Deserves Its 100% RT Score
Netflix is home to Marianne, a French supernatural horror TV series created by Samuel Bodin. Marianne introduces the audience to Emma Larsimon (Victoire Du Bois), a horror author who announces she’s done with the genre and has killed off the main character in her books. However, her life takes a turn with a visit from her childhood friend, Caroline.
Caroline tells Emma she believes her mother is Marianne, the witch from Emma’s books – what Caroline doesn’t know is that Emma had nightmares about Marianne when she was a child. Unfortunately, Caroline hangs herself, and warns Emma about her mother targeting her parents next.
Emma then returns to her hometown to learn what truly happened to Caroline, but she’s not ready for the horrors she will encounter. Marianne currently holds a rare 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, though it must be noted that it only has 16 reviews. Still, Marianne is worth watching thanks to its unsettling atmosphere and psychological horror.
Marianne is a slow-burn experience, which might not be too appealing to some, but it’s worth staying through it thanks to its engaging story, suspense, and mysteries. Although Marianne does have jumpscares, its scare factor comes from its story, character development, and twists.
Why Marianne Season 2 Didn’t Happen
Despite its great critical reception and quality, Marianne was canceled after just one season with eight episodes. Netflix reportedly canceled Marianne due to low viewership, though the numbers weren’t released (via Bloody Disgusting). Viewership numbers are a big factor in Netflix deciding to renew a show or not, as the platform might not deem a show worth its production cost if it’s not attracting an audience.
Although Bodin had plans for more seasons of Marianne, he moved on to other projects after Marianne’s cancellation. Five years later, it’s unlikely Marianne will get another chance, but it’s now one of the best horror miniseries to watch on streaming.
