Must-Watch Addams Family Episode Before Wednesday Season 3
Before Wednesday season 3 officially hits Netflix, be sure to go back and watch one particular episode of The Addams Family.
While audiences can certainly enjoy Wednesday without ever having seen the original Addams Family sitcom or other popular adaptations, there’s a certain benefit to knowing these classic characters. Tim Burton has forged his own path, but there’s apparent influence taken from the 1964 series. A prime example is the introduction of Ophelia Frump, who will play a prominent role in Wednesday season 3.
Be Sure To Go Back & Watch The Addams Family Season 2, Episode 2
The ending of Wednesday season 2 came with the reveal that Ophelia Frump, Morticia’s sister, is being held captive in Hester Frump’s home. This is a massive tease for season 3, indicating that Ophelia will not only be brought into play, but that she will serve as a sort of antagonist. It’s a lot to look forward to, but learning more about this character ahead of time will be a benefit.
Those looking to learn more about Ophelia must go back and watch The Addams Family season 2, episode 2, “Morticia’s Romance: Part 1.” This is the episode in which Morticia’s sister was first introduced on-screen. Played by Carolyn Jones (who also played Morticia), Ophelia was initially brought in as part of a flashback to Gomez and Morticia’s first meeting.
Both seasons of The Addams Family (1964) are available to stream on Prime Video.
In The Addams Family‘s “Morticia’s Romance: Part 1,” we learn that Grandmama Addams and Grandma Frump had arranged for Gomez to marry Ophelia. However, he instead fell for Morticia. The resolution of this story comes in The Addams Family season 2, episode 3, “Morticia’s Romance: Part 2,” during which Gomez’s problems are solved when Ophelia falls in love with Cousin Itt.
What The Addams Family’s Version Of Ophelia Could Mean For Wednesday Season 3
It’s become clear in Wednesday that Addams Family canon isn’t a limiting factor regarding characters and their backstories. Thing is a prime example, since his history was changed entirely in Wednesday compared to the 1960s sitcom. Still, Burton takes influence from the original story, indicating that Ophelia’s introduction in The Addams Family could carry over into Wednesday.
Something that we should certainly expect is for Catherine Zeta-Jones to follow in Carolyn Jones’ footsteps, playing both Morticia and Ophelia. It would be great fun to see this actor play two such drastically different characters in Wednesday season 3, especially since it would be such a meaningful nod to the Addams Family season 2 episode.
Additionally, the story told in both “Morticia’s Romance” episodes in The Addams Family could suggest that Cousin Itt will appear in Wednesday season 3. As Ophelia’s canon love interest, this is a prime opportunity for Burton to bring in a fan favorite Addams Family character.
Whether it will be revealed that Ophelia was once supposed to marry Gomez is unclear. It seems unlikely since we saw in Wednesday season 2 that Hester Frump despises Gomez. Still, it could be established that Ophelia had once coveted her sister’s teenage romance, placing a further rift in their relationship. Speculating is all part of the fun, but to take part, watching this The Addams Family episode is a must.
