Rory Alexander, who portrays Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, has opened up about the show’s fifth episode’s shocking revelation involving a romantic relationship. Blood of My Blood is the first spin-off ofOutlander, and features characters with powers. The spin-off premiered on Starz on August 8, 2025. The first season is 10 episodes long and the finale will premiere on October 10.
In addition to Alexander, Outlander: Blood of My Bloodstars Harriet Slater, Jamie Roy, Hermione Corfield, Jeremy Irvine, and more. In the spin-off series’ fifth episode, titled “Needfire,” Ellen and Brian declare their love for each other. This doesn’t seem to sit right with Murtagh, who has romantic feelings for Ellen and is a confidant of and second cousin to Brian.
In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender, Alexander was asked about how this major reveal at the end of “Needfire” will impact the rest of the first season of Blood of My Blood. Alexander revealed that major issues between his character and Brian will most likely occur, but he didn’t want to give too many of the surprises away. Check out Alexander’s comments below:
ScreenRant: “That moment at the end, where everyone is staring at everyone else, exposes the love dodecahedron to almost all involved. Can you tell us where that’s going to take us for the rest of the season?”
Rory Alexander: “Tough one to tell you what happens without any spoilers. I would imagine that, unless they’ve edited it massively since we filmed it, this is going to cause a bit of conflict between Brian and Murtagh. I would imagine that Jocasta and I aren’t going to be on particularly good terms after this event, and it’s a moment where everyone’s in their own moment of crisis. Murtagh’s best friend has been lying to him while Murtagh sat around talking about Ellen all the time to Brian, which is embarrassing for him. He’s never acknowledged any of these things, but now he knows he’s been lied. Ellen’s chosen another guy over Murtagh twice in one day, and then Jocasta is in her crisis. And after the tent scene, Ellen’s wandering towards a marriage with Malcolm Grant, so it’s a really good midpoint where everything turns on a dime for everyone.”

It seems likely that the drama in 18th-century Scotland is about to simmer over. The fact that Alexander did not want to over-explain in order not to give away spoilers indicates that the last half of the season will have some very surprising moments.
The original Outlander’s eighth and final season will air on Starz in early 2026.
Since Alexander explained that Brian and Murtagh will be at odds afterBlood of My Blood‘s reveal in the fifth episode, there is a possibility that the two men’s bond will forever be broken. Viewers will be seeing firsthand how broken up Murtagh is about the truth, since he had feelings for Ellen, and only time will tell how messy the drama will get.
Based on Alexander’s comments, it seems as though the tension is about to boil over in the season’s latter half, and that is a good move for the series’ momentum. The show needs this kind of suspense and conflict between its characters in order to pull in enough viewers to warrant a second season.
The chances of the men reconciling seem low, but viewers will have to tune into the rest of the first season of Outlander: Blood of my Blood to find out exactly what happens between them.
