Mexico Spinoff Update From Creator Eric Kripke
Eric Kripke, the creator and showrunner of The Boys, just gave a major update about the upcoming spinoff, The Boys: Mexico. The superhero franchise on Amazon Prime Video began in 2019, with post-production on the fifth and final season underway.
Since then, the Boys universe has expanded via the animated series The Boys Presents: Diabolical and the live-action show Gen V, which is about to premiere its second season.
More spinoffs are currently being developed, including a prequel called Vought Rising with Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Stormfront from the original series, and spinoff The Boys: Mexico, which is being produced by Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal. Premiere dates haven’t been announced for either show yet.
While being interviewed by Collider, Kripke revealed an update about The Boys: Mexico. He confirmed that the pilot is currently in development.
While he didn’t know what the future would hold for this series, he confidently claimed that Mexico meets the high standards that all of the Boys spinoffs need to achieve; the script for the pilot is “good” and “super fun.”
The Boys: Mexico has a “totally different tone” while still feeling at home in the universe of The Boys franchise. As for Luna and García Bernal’s involvement, Kripke said that they are “really engaged” with the project.
“The pilot of [The] Boys: Mexico is being developed right now. It’s very cool. I mean, who knows — obviously you never know, but I can say that the world itself meets the standard of all of our spin-offs. It’s our world but a totally different tone, and it’s super fun. Gael and Diego are executive producers, which is amazing and [they] really engaged with it, so — short answer is we’ll see, but I think the script is good.”
What Eric Kripke’s Exciting Boys: Mexico Update Means
Based on Kripke’s update, it’s clear that The Boys: Mexico is still in the very early stages of development. Only the pilot is being created at the moment, so this spinoff is probably at least a couple years away from premiering on Prime Video.
The showrunner made sure to add that Mexico meets their high standards. That’s an important point to make. It’s easy for studios to lean on spinoffs when a franchise is successful, but that doesn’t mean they are quality shows.
Fortunately, The Boys, The Boys Presents: Diabolical and Gen V all have very high Rotten Tomatoes scores (93%, 97% and 97%, respectively, to be exact).
The producers creating all the shows in the Boys franchise have a great track record of success, and Kripke’s update proved that they don’t plan on messing that up anytime soon.
Our Take On The Boys: Mexico’s “Cool” & “Super Fun” Pilot
At this point, there are multiple Boys spinoffs in the works, some of which have already launched and others in pre-production. With that many shows in the same universe, each one needs to be unique and stand apart from all the other ones.
Diabolical had the distinction of being an animated project, which was fun to see. Gen V is set at a college and brings a more youthful vibe the franchise. The Boys: Mexico is expected to be the most unique one of them all since it will be the first spinoff set outside the United States.
Luna has starred in such movies as Y tu mamá también, The Book of Life and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, as well as the spinoff Andor, while García Bernal is known for Y tu mamá también, Bad Education, Babel, Coco, Mozart in the Jungle and Marvel’s Werewolf by Night.
It’s unlikely that either one of these award-winning actors would attach themselves to The Boys: Mexico as executive producers if they weren’t committed to making an exceptional show.
Gen V season 2 premieres Wednesday, September 27 on Amazon Prime Video.
