Martin Scorsese Confirms His Next Movie, Starring Leonardo DiCaprio & Jennifer Lawrence

Legendary director Martin Scorsese confirms what his next movie will be. The filmmaker’s last feature directorial project was 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which went on to be nominated for 10 Oscars. Scorsese has also produced this year’s In the Hand of Dante since his last historical epic’s success.

Per Deadline, Scorsese’s next film is confirmed to be an adaptation of the ghost novel What Happens at Night, and will star Oscar winners Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Both actors had buzzy releases this year, with DiCaprio starring in One Battle After Another and Lawrence in Die My Love. They also both starred in 2021’s Don’t Look Up.

Patrick Marber, an Oscar-nominated screenwriter for Notes on a Scandal, wrote the new movie’s script. Deadline also reports that Apple Original Films is in talks to produce Scorsese’s What Happens at Night alongside Studiocanal, which purchased the rights to Peter Cameron’s novel in 2023. Apple previously produced Killers of the Flower Moon and distributed it with Paramount Pictures.

What Happens at Night‘s story follows an American couple who travel to a remote, snowy town in Europe to claim a baby they mean to adopt. They check into a mostly abandoned hotel where they are greeted by an eccentric cast of characters. What Happens at Night is hoping to begin January next year.

What This Means For Martin Scorsese’s Next Movie

DiCaprio is a frequent collaborator of Scorsese, having starred in Killers of the Flower Moon, The Aviator, and The Wolf of Wall Street. Thus, expectations are likely to be very high for what the pair will do next. Die My Love was produced by Scorsese, but Lawrence has yet to star in a movie he’s directing, so she will bring needed fresh blood to his next project.

What Happens at Night sounds more ethereal than Scorsese’s most famous period pieces, but he has also expertly helmed the more modern The Wolf of Wall Street and whimsical Hugo. There’s not much reason to think this movie won’t be another rousing success for Scorsese, given his proven versatility and the talent of the two leads, and a good working relationship between them all.

It will be great to see DiCaprio and Lawrence working together again after Don’t Look Up‘s uneven performance. As two of the greatest actors of their time, there is still a lot of potential for them as co-stars. And no matter what Scorsese does, it feels epic, a tone I can’t wait to see applied to this relatively contained ghost story.

Hopefully, filming on What Happens at Night gets underway when the team is planning, meaning we will likely see the movie sometime in 2027. It’s a long wait, but it takes time to create the masterpieces that Martin Scorsese has long been known to produce.
