Mark Ruffalo’s Perfect Fit For 89% Rotten Tomatoes Crime Drama Task Explained By Creator
Mark Ruffalo is back on the small screen in a new series that received an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and the show’s creator revealed why the Marvel star was the perfect actor for the role. The celebrity is well known for starring in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, playing Bruce Banner/Hulk in four Avengers movies and Thor: Ragnarok, among others.
Ruffalo is also a TV star, having appeared on such shows as I Know This Much Is True (for which he won an Emmy and Golden Globe) and All the Light We Cannot See, and the TV film The Normal Heart. He can currently be seen on the HBO miniseries Task.
During ScreenRant’s interview with Brad Ingelsby for Task, the show’s creator opened up about why Ruffalo was the perfect person to star on this show. Ingelsby acknowledged that Ruffalo “can do everything.” He also noticed some similarities between the actor and his character, Tom, who’s an FBI agent. Both are kind, compassionate and inclusive.
Ruffalo has played police officers in past roles and is considered “very accessible” to movie and TV audiences. Ingelsby added that the actor who played Tom needed to be believable, which meant the list of casting choices ended up narrowing significantly, and Ruffalo was at the very top.
The character of Tom goes through a lot of emotions on Task due to a crisis. He’s leading a team and trying to stay professional while dealing with everything else in his life. The producers needed to cast an actor who could handle all of that. At the end of the day, Ruffalo “succeeded tremendously in pulling it all off.”
Brad Inglesby: He’s so good, Mark. He can do everything. I think there are a lot of characteristics in Tom, the character that Mark, has as a person, and some of those are [that] he’s incredibly kind, compassionate, inclusive. He’s a father. He’s got kids of his own. He’s played cops before. He’s very, very accessible to the audience, I think, and I think he brings–it’s also one of those things, when you think about the character, like a guy who grew up in the Northeast, he was in the seminary, he was the theologian, a priest at a parish man. Who’s believable in that part? The list becomes very, very small. And once we got to that place of having to go out to actors, Mark was at the top of it. And I’ve loved Mark since You Can Count On Me. I think he’s just great in everything, and I think he’s able to do so many things really, really well. And I think this is a tough, tough part. It’s a character that’s adrift. He’s going through a crisis. He has to lead a team, he’s got to be professional, and he has to forgive his son, ultimately. There’s a lot of emotions at play. It’s a really tough emotional part, and I think Mark, he succeeded tremendously in pulling it all off.
What Brad Ingelsby’s Praise Of Mark Ruffalo Means For Task
The HBO miniseries, which has an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, has received positive reviews so far, and Ruffalo is one of the actors being singled out for his remarkable acting skills on the show.
Task also stars Tom Pelphrey, Emilia Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Raúl Castillo, Jamie McShane, Sam Keeley, Fabien Frankel, Alison Oliver, Silvia Dionicio and Martha Plimpton. Task just premiered on the premium cable network on September 7, and there are six more episodes left to air.
This means there’s plenty of time for the show to continue building buzz and gaining more viewers with each week. Word of mouth can help a series tremendously.
What’s also helping Task is the fact that is it was created by Ingelsby, who also created Mare of Easttown for HBO. The Kate Winslet-starring miniseries won multiple awards and debuted with a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Task and Easttown have been compared to each other, which isn’t surprising considering Ingelsby’s involvement, but that also means Task could receive some nominations come award season next year.

Only one episode of Task has aired so far, but already, Ruffalo is proving to be just as strong of an actor as he’s always been. Fans always love seeing him in the MCU as the Hulk, and for good reason, but hopefully, he continues choosing dramatic projects like Task that allow him to truly show off his acting skills.
Ruffalo might start receiving several more award nominations in the coming months, and all of that will be well deserved.
