James Gunn’s Casting Approach Pays Off in Peacemaker Season 2
James Gunn’s unique approach to casting appears to be paying off in a major way, as seen in Peacemaker season 2. While the new co-head of DC Studios is under a microscope as the rebooted DCU attempts to get off the ground, Gunn’s expertise appears to be paying off.
Gunn has proven to be a somewhat controversial figure, thanks in part to the zealous fanbase of the DCEU architect, Zack Snyder, but it’s clear that he has a talent for storytelling. From his work as a director and writer, to his taste in music, there is a lot that Gunn gets right. And it appears to be working out well for the DCU.
The DCU’s Latest Recast Shows James Gunn’s Approach To Casting Can Pay Off
James Gunn has not been shy about casting close friends and even family in prominent roles in his projects. From his frequent collaborations with his brother, Sean Gunn, to casting his talented wife Jennifer Holland as a central figure in Peacemaker, Gunn likes to work with people he knows or with whom he has a previous relationship.
Building on this, when Gunn finds new actors and performers that he particularly enjoys working with, he finds ways to cast these performers for various projects he is working on. With notable names such as Michael Rooker and Nathan Fillion having appeared in many of James Gunn’s projects throughout his career.
While this apparent favoritism could be looked on negatively, there does appear to be some upsides, such as Gunn being able to call up a major actor like Rooker when he is in need, and being able to secure this remarkable talent to tackle a character like Red St. Wild.
Gunn revealed in the Peacemaker Official Podcast for episode 4 of season 2, that Rooker took over the role as a favor, after the previous actor was not working out. Not only has this resulted in Rooker delivering an outstanding performance, but it shows that Gunn is willing to be flexible when something isn’t working.
Peacemaker’s Other Big Recast Supports Gunn’s DCU Casting Approach
While it isn’t always feasible to change an actor late into the development of a project, if a performer isn’t a good fit for the role, it makes more sense to change them before completing the project and releasing it to the world. And this is something that also happened during season 1 of Peacemaker.
One of the most beloved characters of the entire show is Vigilante, as played by Freddie Stroma. However, Stroma was not cast in the role until filming of season 1 was more than halfway complete. Several cast members and Gunn himself confirmed that the previous actor didn’t work as the character, and Stroma was brought in to replace them.
And while it would have been incredibly challenging to recast and ensure the entire series still works cohesively, Gunn was able to change course when things weren’t working out. With his approach of developing close ties to these performers, and a willingness to change course, the DCU appears to be in safe hands with James Gunn for Peacemaker and beyond.
