Invasion Season 3, Episode 1 Raises Terrifying New Questions About What The Aliens Are Planning Next
Two years after Invasion season 2 ended with Trevante Cole leaping through the alien portal and reuniting with Caspar Morrow on the other side, Invasion season 3 begins by unveiling a completely different world. Trevante and Caspar are both presumed dead, and the Earth is supposedly safe from aliens.
It’s revealed that after Trevante went through the portal, the alien mothership fell, and the alien hunter-killers began returning to it to die. However, Trevante’s return changes everything. He is seen as a hero and the most famous man on Earth, but his reappearance is also a huge warning that the government doesn’t want to heed.
Without the aliens around for the past two years, humans have become complacent and more sure of their safety, but Trevante’s return makes it clear that the aliens are not done fighting. While it was clear the invasion couldn’t be over yet, the alien hunter-killers faking their deaths raises a terrifying question.
If the aliens had truly been alive for the past two years and were faking their demise, what were they doing during that time? Invasion‘s creator has teased that audiences will be getting answers in season 3 regarding the aliens’ plans, but episode 1 only raises new questions.
Naturally, the first episode of a new season isn’t going to give everything away, and the faster-paced episode sets the season up well. Knowing the aliens have been hibernating and biding their time also means they will be more deadly and smarter than ever, creating a scarier enemy than in past seasons.
Even The New Alien Design Hints At A Smarter Enemy
Beyond the potential ramifications of the hunter-killers faking their deaths after the ending of season 2, Invasion season 3 has also set up an entirely different kind of alien invader. This follows the lead of both seasons 1 and 2, which have each introduced separate types of aliens.
Back in season 1, the aliens appeared on-screen far less than in season 2, but their design was quite memorable. Invasion season 1’s aliens had spindly spear-like legs and tesseracting bodies that almost roll as they move. These aliens were deadly, but they only represented the first step of the invasion.
Unlike many alien invasion movies and shows, which focus on one distinctive alien species or design, Invasion has introduced a new type of alien each season. These types signify different evolutions or purposes within the same overarching species, and in season 2, their expanded invasion introduced the hunter-killer variants.
The hunter-killer aliens were clearly sent to Earth in a more predatory role meant to hunt humans while paving the way for alien domination of the planet. Now, season 3’s teased new aliens will need to be more lethal and intelligent than their predecessors.
While Invasion‘s new aliens did not appear in season 3, episode 1, audiences can already catch a glimpse of them in the show’s season 3 trailer. Along with bringing back most of the main characters, the trailer shows an alien with sharp, translucent, pincer-like legs and a jellyfish-like head.
If the series does fulfill creator Simon Kinberg’s promise of revealing the final alien threat, then these creatures are likely the main protectors of the hive mind and potentially responsible for carrying out the aliens’ final plan. Whatever the case, it will be exciting to see how the new alien design will translate into an even more deadly enemy.
Trevante’s Return Proves The Hive Mind Reaches Further Than Ever

Where previous episodes of Invasion switched perspectives to various characters across the globe,Invasion season 3, episode 1, centers largely on Trevante’s story. The only other main character that plays a notable role in the episode is Jamila Huston, and that is by design.
Invasion season 3’s narrative is already much more streamlined than in past seasons, with the two characters teaming up by the end of the episode. Focusing the story on Trevante’s return to Earth and his amnesia about what happened while he was gone sets the alien hive mind up to continue playing a pivotal role in season 3.
The alien hive mind was introduced in season 1, and the concept was expanded a lot in season 2 through the children’s ability to interact with it. This culminated in Caspar’s glazed-over eyes in the season finale. If Trevante is now part of the hive mind, though, it could change everything for Invasion‘s upcoming fight.
As of episode 1, audiences know very little about what actually happened to Trevante. He has slowly begun to remember pieces of his time, but, as the government agents note, there is no way of knowing if he has been compromised. Whether he is now working with the aliens or not, his return spells danger for humanity.
Trevante is either a dangerous part of the hive mind, or humanity is two years behind in its fight. The hive mind is one of the most daunting aspects of the show because it makes the aliens so hard to fight. If Trevante is part of it now, he may struggle to retain his humanity in Invasion season 3.
