Goody Addams’ Warning in Wednesday Season 1 Foreshadows Ophelia’s Fate

After making elusive references to her throughout part 1, the final episode of Wednesday season 2 finally reveals what happened to Ophelia Frump. Though Morticia has believed her sister to be missing or dead for the past 20 years, Wednesday season 2’s ending confirms that Ophelia is much closer to home than she thought. In fact, she’s been kept hidden in Grandmama’s basement.

As Wednesday’s titular character faced losing her psychic visions after abusing her powers and rejecting her familial bonds, Morticia increasingly compared her daughter to Ophelia. Both Ophelia and Wednesday are Raven psychics, much like season 1’s Addams family ancestor Goody, whose psychic visions and powers are much more potent, unpredictable, dark, and dangerous.

Though Morticia dives much deeper into the consequences of embracing the dangerous aspects of a Raven in Wednesday season 2, such warnings were already given by Goody in season 1. However, rather than being experienced by Wednesday, Goody’s prediction for Ravens’ dark futures ultimately proved true in regards to Ophelia Frump in season 2.

Goody Addams’ Warning To Wednesday About Ravens Is Exactly What Happened To Ophelia

In Wednesday season 1, episode 6, Goody Addams appeared to Wednesday and cautioned her, “The path of a Raven is a solitary one. You end up alone, unable to trust others, only seeing the darkness within them.” This is a path Wednesday has gradually been going down throughout season 2, but we learn that Ophelia Frump has already fulfilled that dark fate long beforehand.

Ophelia has been stuck in solitude for the past 20 years, having already been alone after isolating and distancing herself from others in her life, being unable to trust her sister, mother, or any confidantes around her, and seeing only the darkness in her loved ones. Ophelia’s fate is the exact path that the now-absent Goody Addams cautioned Wednesday about, and which Morticia desperately hopes to avoid repeating.

However, there’s still plenty regarding what happened to Ophelia that’s unclear. We’re not sure exactly what happened after she left Willow Hill, and what the circumstances were of her winding up secretly locked up and hidden away by Hester Frump in her basement. As far as audiences have seen, Ophelia went down the typical Raven path outlined by Goody, but Wednesday season 3 could tell us a different story from her perspective.

While Wednesday does generally still look at the world and the people in it with a darker tint, she has an incredible asset to avoid the completely solitary outlook of Ravens: her family. The Addamses have an intense, close bond with fierce, undying love for one another, which brings a necessary source of light and optimism into Wednesday’s life.

The support of Gomez, the protection from Morticia, the innocence of Pugsley, the kindness of Uncle Fester, the level-headed loyalty of Thing, and the overall strength of their bond gives Wednesday a permanent support system that other Ravens may not have. Goody seemingly lacked a family unit with that closeness, and Ophelia certainly lacked that type of affectionate love from Hester.

Wednesday loves her family above all else, even if she tries to outwardly deny that affection or sense of unity. She prefers to project herself as a solitary figure, but Wednesday isn’t anywhere as close to being alone as she thinks. Not just because of her family, but also because of Wednesday’s Nevermore Outcasts like Enid, Bianca, Ajax, Agnes, and Eugene.
