Gen V Season 2 Sets Up A Major Betrayal In The Boys Season 5
Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Gen V season 2, episode 5.Gen V season 2, episode 5 features a familiar face, and this character’s cameo sets the stage for a major betrayal in The Boys season 5. Sister Sage is one of the most intriguing Supes introduced in The Boys season 4. It’s largely thanks to her that Homelander’s takeover succeeds, and season 4’s ending hints that she isn’t done scheming.
Gen V season 2 sees Sister Sage in action yet again, though it’s not clear who she’s working for — or what her intentions are — in “The Kids Are Not Alright.” The latest installment of Prime Video’s spinoff reveals she has a close relationship with its new villain, Cipher.
It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on between Sage and Cipher, but it seems inevitable that it will shake things up in The Boys’ final season. Homelander is already leery of Sage throughout season 4, and the franchise’s latest twist suggests he has good reason to be.
Gen V Season 2, Episode 5 Reveals That Cipher Has A Relationship With Sister Sage
Gen V season 2, episode 5 reveals that Cipher and Sister Sage have a sexual relationship with one another. They also appear to be planning something, though “The Kids Are Not Alright” doesn’t delve into the details. Sage shows up during two scenes in the latest installment, the first a flashback that’s likely to leave viewers scratching their heads.
After comically informing us that Sage is the one who gifted Cipher the gnome from Gen V season 2, episode 4, Sage and Cipher start having sex. The man in the hyperbaric chamber watches the scene unfold, potentially adding fuel to the theory that Cipher is being controlled by him.
Whatever’s going on with Cipher, Sister Sage adds another complication to his storyline. Whether or not he’s being puppeted by another person, he’s clearly wrapped up in Sage’s schemes. This raises new questions, as Cipher doesn’t seem to have much love for Homelander. Meanwhile, Sage is totally entangled with both Homelander and Vought — or so it seems.
Later in “The Kids Are Not Alright,” Sage visits Cipher at Elmira, where Godolkin’s dean is now keeping Gen V‘s main characters. This moment gives viewers more insight into what’s going on between the pair. It also suggests that they’re after a similar goal — though that throws Sage’s intentions and loyalties into question.
Sister Sage Is Helping Cipher With His Plan To Hone Marie’s Powers
Cipher and Sage’s conversation at Elmira confirms that they’re both invested in upgrading Marie Moreau’s power, and they acknowledge that Homelander will be unhappy about this. This is the first hint that Sage’s plans extend beyond the leader of The Seven. She earns his trust at the end of The Boys season 4, but that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s loyal.
Sage notes that Cipher “got what [he] wanted” when she sees Marie and the others in Elmira. This implies that he’s the one who stands to gain from the group leveling up. However, the fact that she gives him support — and later claims they’re both going to get everything they want — indicates that she has a vested interest, too.
Sage also insists that Cipher shouldn’t worry about Homelander, almost implying that she has that threat under control. The whole conversation is perplexing, but this hints that Sage isn’t working for the person she claims to be.
Why Sage Tells Cipher They’re Running Out Of Time In Gen V Season 2, Episode 5
Of all the cryptic things Cipher and Sister Sage say to each other in “The Kids Are Not Alright,” the latter’s suggestion that they’re “running out of time” is the most intriguing. Assuming that the man in the hyperbaric chamber is controlling Cipher — and Sage is fully aware of it — they could be looking for Marie to heal him before the damage is irreversible.
Of course, this could also have something to do with Homelander. With The Boys‘ villain gaining more and more power, Cipher and Sage might need to achieve their goal before he inevitably finds out, or becomes even more untouchable. If the man in the chamber is Thomas Godolkin, he might be looking to grab power alongside Sage by dethroning Homelander.
Cipher’s Connection To Sage Sets Up A Major Betrayal In The Boys Season 5
Only time will tell what Cipher and Sister Sage are up to in Gen V season 2, but regardless of the coming twist, the spinoff is setting up a massive betrayal in The Boys. Intentionally or not, Cipher’s plan seems to threaten Homelander’s place at the top of the Supe hierarchy. And if Sage is aware of this — and doesn’t care — it’s only a matter of time before she and Homelander have a falling out.
If anyone is capable of outsmarting Homelander, it’s Sister Sage. So, it’s possible her betrayal won’t go as disastrously as one would expect. There’s a chance she and Cipher will succeed at what they’re doing without getting caught. However, that might prove underwhelming story-wise.
If Homelander does learn about Sage’s secret visits to Cipher, he’s unlikely to show the other Supe mercy. This won’t be the first time that Sage kept him in the dark, either, which will only make the situation worse. She has a knack for manipulating him, but it’s important that she doesn’t get too confident and mess up.
Could Cipher Be Controlling Sister Sage With His Power In Gen V Season 2?
When considering Cipher’s relationship with Sister Sage in Gen V season 2, there’s another question that comes up: Is Sage really in control? She seems too clever to be caught in Cipher’s snare, but we shouldn’t overlook the fact that he can control other people. There’s a chance he’s using Sage to get what he wants without her even consenting to it.
This would be a shocking twist, and it would set Cipher — or whoever is puppeting him around — up as a formidable opponent. It would also change the nature of The Boys season 5 betrayal that feels inevitable after Gen V‘s sophomore season. However, I’ll be surprised if Homelander shows Sage mercy, even if her betrayal isn’t entirely her fault.
