Game of Thrones Spoiled House of the Dragon’s Sunfyre Fate Years Ago

Includes MASSIVE SPOILERS for House of the Dragon, based on Fire & Blood! One of House of the Dragon’s biggest death mysteries was already solved twelve years ago on Game of Thrones. House of the Dragon makes for an excellent first prequel, given its epic scale and narrative parallels to the original series. Funnily enough, though, Game of Thrones already spoiled how the Dance of the Dragons ends.

Most audiences will have forgotten that Joffrey Baratheon mentioned Rhaenyra Targaryen’s fate in Game of Thrones season 3, establishing the Dance’s events in the TV world’s canon. Given the changes made in House of the Dragon season 2, this might create a notable inconsistency.

A GOT Season 3 Joffrey Scene Confirmed That Sunfyre Didn’t Die In HOTD Season 2

Sunfyre in House of the Dragon

In Game of Thrones season 3 Joffrey explicitly states that Rhaenyra was killed by her brother’s dragon, referring to Aegon and Sunfyre. This is strange, given that Sunfyre allegedly died at the Battle of Rook’s Rest in House of the Dragon season 2. In Fire & Blood, Sunfyre lives much longer.

The fact that the TV series would kill Sunfyre off early has always seemed unfortunate, and I’ve been predicting for months that they’ll revert this change in House of the Dragon season 3. After all, it was Larys who claimed Sunfyre was dead, and he’s not exactly the most trustworthy guy.

There’s certainly room for Aegon to spend season 3 traveling to Sunfyre and having the two heal together. Actor Tom Glynn-Carney teased an internal journey for his character, and this might be what he was referring to.

There’s always the aspect that Fire & Blood is written similarly to an in-world historical text, and is subjective. History could have stated that Aegon executed Rhaenyra with Sunfyre for a bit of dramatic flare, but that doesn’t necessarily make it true. However, I just don’t see the benefit of going down that route.

What Happens To Sunfyre In George R.R. Martin’s Books

Aegon and Sunfyre lying badly injured and burned in House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4

Let’s be clear, Sunfyre does die. I suppose that won’t come as a shock, given that almost every dragon dies. This happens near the end of the war, with Sunfyre sustaining injuries from Rook’s Rest and further battles. It’s rather astounding how long Sunfyre survives given what it endures, making it a fan-favorite.

In the books, Sunfyre is brutally injured, much like Aegon, but takes time recovering around Rook’s Rest and eventually is able to fly again. Although the dragon is injured, Sunfyre manages to take flight for its rider, even dealing devastating blows to Rhaenyra’s allies later on. It would be a serious loss for House of the Dragon to ignore this story.
