Frozen 3’s Status Gets Disappointing Update

Frozen 3 gets a disappointing update from Olaf star. In 2013, the first Frozen movie took the world by storm. However, the wait for a sequel went on for six years before Elsa (Idina Menzel) and Anna (Kristen Bell) returned in 2019 for a sequel. Another six years have gone by, but not without development.

The long-awaited threequel was confirmed by Disney in 2023. Originally scheduled for release in 2026, the date was then pushed to November 24, 2027, making the wait between the second and third installment eight years. Jennifer Lee, who co-directed the first two movies with Chris Buck, has signed on to direct both Frozen 3 and Frozen 4.

While talking to Collider at the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his new film Adulthood, Josh Gad shared an update on Frozen 3. He revealed that he had a “preview of what the movie is,” but he hasn’t received anything on the songs or started recording. On the upcoming sequel, he teased that it’d be “worth the wait.” Read his comment below:

We have not started recording. We have not heard songs yet. I was lucky enough to get sort of a preview of what the movie is, and it’s going to be worth the wait. It’s pretty extraordinary what they’re doing. Pretty extraordinary.

For me, my whole thing was don’t do a sequel unless there’s a reason to do a sequel. If you have a story worth telling, then call us up and let’s do it. To Jennifer Lee’s credit, she really took that note and gave herself that note and has created something that’s going to be worth the wait.

What This Means For Frozen 3

Gad’s comment indicates that Frozen 3 is still in development. Recently, a Disney executive also offered an update on Frozen 3‘s script and songs. While some are “under wraps,” the executive stressed that the work being done behind-the-scenes are “phenomenal,” and the return to Arendelle will feel “very organic.”

In the July report, the executive teased that he had an idea of what the song would be, but the details are still to be sorted out. Gad’s comment mirrors the overall sentiment shared by Jared Bush, hinting that the songs were still being worked on. However, Frozen 3 already has a fantastic story for Elsa and Anna to return.

Frozen 3‘s delay will likely be well justified. Not only does it give the creatives time to make another worthwhile sequel, but it could potentially benefit from the late November release date. In 2019, Frozen 2 opened a week before Thanksgiving and set a record for a Thanksgiving weekend at the box office back then, grossing around $124 million over a five-day holiday period.

The movie totaled over $1 billion at the global box office and became one of the highest-grossing animated movies of all time. A similar release window for the third entry and plenty of time for the film to develop give it the best shot. While there is no solid news about the upcoming sequel at this time, it sounds like Frozen 3 is on track to offer audience a well-earned return.
