Foundation Season 3 Showrunner Explains Ending Deaths
Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Foundation season 3, episode 10!Foundation showrunner David S. Goyer explains the ending of season 3, and what its series-shifting death means for the story moving forward. Foundation season 3 delivered a shocking conclusion to Empire’s Genetic Dynasty, with Brother Dusk putting an end to their lineage. He killed Brother Day and Demerzel in the final episode, while also ending their genetic lineage for good.
Speaking with /Film, Goyer explained the tragedy behind Demerzel’s death in Foundation season 3. The irony is that Dusk destroying the clone tanks would have set her free anyway, but he still killed her because he didn’t know if he could trust her. He also addressed the tragedy of Day’s death because of how much he’d changed:
The act that actually frees [Demerzel] is Dusk destroying the clone tanks, because once the clone tanks and that baby are dead, there’s no genetic dynasty anymore. There’s nothing to protect. So the irony is she would also have been free there, but Dusk doesn’t believe, once she’s free, that she would be on his side, necessarily. So he comes up with this idea to both destroy her and the clone tanks. I just like that tragic irony of Day changing as a character and becoming selfless and Demerzel being free, but the moment she’s free is also the moment that she dies.
What Foundation Season 3’s Ending Deaths Mean For Season 4
Multiple characters in Foundationhave been following the titular society’s predictions from Harri Seldon that Empire would fall within 500 years of the show’s start. Now, those events have been set into motion by Dusk. Demerzel’s death and the purging of the genetic dynasty means the last Cleon clone left is Dusk, deciding to rule alone as Brother Darkness.
This lays the groundwork for a very different Foundation season 4, as Empire’s rule will be consolidated between Dusk and the single child he left alive. The season will also feature some behind-the-scenes shifts, with Goyer leaving as showrunner, replaced by Ian Goldberg and David Kob. This too may impact how the story develops as Empire’s collapse remains ahead.
For now, Dusk still has the Prime Radiant, meaning he’ll have the power to continue his rule long into the future. But the episode revealed the Mycogen robot head sent out a signal to robots elsewhere in the galaxy. This offers a new threat everyone will have to contend with, made more difficult now that Demerzel is gone.

With Foundation season 3 solidifying the end of the genetic dynasty, the next crisis the galaxy faces may finally bring a close to the Empire’s struggle against the inevitable. While Brother Dusk’s attempt to consolidate power may work for some time, the threat of a robot army alongside whatever else will happen following the Mule’s likely defeat.
Since the sci-fi series is pulling from Isaac Asimov’s original work while also maintaining its own original ideas, there’s no concrete way of knowing how the future will unfold. But, with Foundation implying Empire is on the cusp of collapse thanks to Dusk’s hubris, the final nail in the coffin is likely already being driven in.
