Exclusive Brilliant Minds Season 2 Premiere Clip “The Phantom Hook”

Brilliant Minds season 2 premieres tonight, and ScreenRant was granted an exclusive clip to tease a tense new dynamic this season. The freshman season got great Rotten Tomato scores by both critics and audiences, but it was still a waiting game after Brilliant Minds season 1’s cliffhanger ending, one of the last NBC shows to get renewed.

Luckily, Brilliant Minds season 2 was given the renewal green light, and this season will ramp up the psychological tension, as well as between the members of Dr. Oliver Wolf’s (Zachary Quinto) team. The problem is newcomer Dr. Charlie Porter (Brian Altemus), who joins the team as a senior resident.

From the first moment, he rubs everyone the wrong way in Brilliant Minds season 2: Smug, competitive, and openly disrespectful to both patients and his colleagues alike, Dr. Porter is a jangling, discordant note in the harmony of the other main characters. In ScreenRant’s exclusive clip, his abrasive personality is on full display. We’re certain he’ll immediately become your new favorite character to hate this season:

It’s clear that there is no love lost between Dr. Porter and the rest of the team. Unfortunately, they are, as the clip shows, junior residents to his senior resident, and, as such, must defer to him in certain situations at work, which could cause real problems down the road if they neither like nor respect him.

What’s less clear is why he’s joined Dr. Wolf’s team. In the episode, Muriel speaks incredibly highly of the young doctor and points out his Stanford background, but Porter himself holds little regard for Dr. Wolf. He may suck up to Dr. Wolf’s face, but behind his back, he’s disparaging the neurologist to his team. He obviously resents having to follow Wolf.

It raises the question of why he agreed to the residency placement in the first place. If he’s such a brilliant, skilled young doctor with so much promise, then why is he doing his neurology residency with a doctor he doesn’t respect or take seriously? It’s very odd that he wouldn’t have lobbied for a residency at one of the other hospitals in the area.

Dr. Porter Clearly Has An Ulterior Motive

As such, Dr. Porter likely has an ulterior motive for being assigned to Dr. Wolf’s team in Brilliant Minds season 2. The clip is brief, but it reveals so much, establishing both his arrogant personality and his combative dynamic with the interns. More than anything, though, it reveals the clear disdain he holds for Dr. Wolf.

Porter’s disdain of Wolf and his “fan club” isn’t just the attitude of a disrespectful, know-it-all young doctor; it feels personal. He seems almost offended that the other interns look up to Dr. Wolf so much. His jabs are pointed and weirdly vicious, almost like he’s trying to undermine the trust the other interns have in Wolf. It feels duplicitous; he’s Iago whispering in Othello’s ear.

It’s enough to make you wonder if perhaps Dr. Porter has beef with Dr. Wolf because of some event that happened in the past, and Porter has made it personal. Perhaps Wolf made an incorrect diagnosis of someone close to Porter early in his career, and Porter is seeking revenge.

Or perhaps Porter got in trouble in his former hospital, and being put on Wolf’s team is his last chance, a fact he’s keeping from everyone. The official NBC description of Porter confirms that, whatever it is, the senior resident is hiding something from his new team, describing Porter as “a new neurology resident at Bronx General Hospital who believes in winning and views medicine less as a calling and more as a sport. Charlie is guarded, competitive, and hiding a secret from Wolf and his interns.”

With how clearly the clip establishes him as a villain and an easy character to root against, it will be fascinating to see how Brilliant Minds season 2 peels back his layers – and if there’s something worth redeeming.
