Every Power The Spirits At The Woodstone Mansion Have Explained

When Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) inherit Woodstone Manor in the Ghosts pilot, they fall in love with the estate, not realizing it’s haunted. Initially, the spirits think the new couple isn’t that bad, but when they realize that the Livings want to open a B&B at Woodstone Manor, they decide to display their full powers.

Many spirits revealed their abilities in the pilot, but the show continues to bestow new powers as the seasons continue, like Hetty’s big power reveal in Ghosts season 4. Though many of the Ghosts characters are inspired by the original U.K. version, with many more seasons and episodes, the CBS continues to evolve the powers in Ghosts.

Thor Can Control The Lights

Thor Can Harness Electricity After His Lightning-Induced Death

Thor (Devan Chandler Long) is the oldest known ghost on the Woodstone Estate. He can control electricity. Thor’s ghost powers came about because he died after he was struck by lightning, giving the Viking a robust connection to electric currents. Thor’s power is identical to Robin’s in Ghosts U.K. since they both died from a lightning strike.

Jay and the other guests at Woodstone B&B can easily witness Thor’s power. For instance, in Ghosts season 1, episode 5, “Halloween,” Thor accidentally burned down Sam and Jay’s new gazebo with his electric connection. While it’s a fun trick, it’s not the most useful power in Ghosts.

Sass Can Enter People’s Dreams

The Indigenous Spirit Is A Storyteller

One of the more powerful yet subtle spirit powers in Ghosts is Sasappis’ ability to enter people’s dreams. Sass (Román Zaragoza) uses his power by hovering his hand over a sleeping person’s head. When he does that, he materializes in the person’s dream narrative.

Sass’ ghost power was revealed in Ghosts season 3, episode 2, “Man of Your Dreams.” In the episode, he communicated with Jay in multiple dreams. The Lenape ghost used his power to partake in Jay’s dreams and convince him to do various things.

Seeing Sasappis outside his traditional dress was a fun change of pace. Still, Sass’ ghost power has been underutilized, especially since he is the only ghost who can communicate with Jay while using it. While the details surrounding Sass’s death remain a mystery, sometimes their powers are related to their passing.

Isaac Makes A Foul Smell When The Livings Pass Through Him

Isaac’s Ghost Power Is Underwhelming

Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) possesses a ghost power that is nothing to write home about. Ghosts season 1, episode 1, revealed that since Isaac died of dysentery, he gives off a foul smell when living people pass through him. The ghost’s underwhelming power garners him the nickname “Founding Farter” in Ghosts season 4.

I Never Thought Isaac’s Love Life Could Get Worse, But Ghosts Season 4, Episode 16 Proved Me Wrong

Ghosts season 4 episode 16 somehow managed to make the ongoing tragedy of Isaac’s love life even sadder after the season 3 finale’s canceled wedding.

Isaac has one of the more embarrassing ghost powers. When he started dating Nigel, Isaac feared his ghost power would turn his partner off. Still, Isaac’s star power makes up for his underwhelming spirit power in Ghosts. Isaac is often at the center of Woodstone B&B activities and influences those around him with his words, not powers.

Hetty Can Be Seen By The Livings (But Only On St. Patrick’s Day)

Hetty’s Power Was Revealed Later, Likely Because She Learned Of Her True Ancestry

Sunil sitting with Hetty in Ghosts season 4 episode 16

Hetty was one of the last spirits to learn what her power was, but it was worth the wait. Hetty can be seen and heard by any and all Livings one day a year: St. Patrick’s Day. This happened for the first time in Ghosts season 4, episode 10.

The power is so new that the characters are still speculating on why the ability is manifesting now, but the leading theory is that her powers are tied to her Irish ancestry, which she only recently learned about. Perhaps accepting her true self unlocked Hetty’s powers – but we’ll have to wait until next St. Patrick’s Day to be sure.

Alberta Can Project A Humming Noise The Livings Can Hear

Alberta Is A Jazz Singer

Alberta and descendant Alicia in Ghosts season 4

Alberta Haynes (Danielle Pinnock), a Prohibition-era lounge singer, has transcendent ghost power. This power was revealed in the pilot episode of Ghosts. After her death, Alberta’s singing voice projects as a hum that even living people can hear. Initially, Alberta’s power is one of the most noteworthy in the series – the ability to be heard by Livings.

Alberta does not frequently use her power – which can work even on electronics, like Alexa. However, her ability to be heard saved the day in Ghosts season 4, episode 15, when her living relative Alicia is convinced of her fiancé’s true love by Alberta humming just the right song to send a sign.

Flower Makes The Livings High When They Pass Through Her

Flower Is Permanently High After Her Death

Flower hugging Jay in Ghosts

Flower died while she was high on hallucinogenic mushrooms, so when she passes through a Living, she makes them temporarily but extremely high. Instead of being helpful, Flower’s ghost power can throw things off. For instance, in Ghosts season 2, episode 17, Flower passes through Jay, and he creates a hit recipe while stoned but can’t remember it later.

Flower’s power doesn’t benefit her other than the comedic effect of watching others become too stoned to function. Interestingly, spirits can become high in the afterlife, as demonstrated in Ghosts season 4, episode 20, when Pete realizes inhaling the smoke from a Living has an effect on the dead.

Pete Can Leave The Property

The Former Scout Troop Leader Has An Impressive Talent

Pete, a former scout troop leader and travel agent, discovered his ghost power later in the show’s run, but it was worth the wait. In Ghosts season 3, episode 9, Pete discovered he could leave the property by accident when he stepped outside its boundaries, something no other spirit had yet been able to do.

Moreover, Pete’s background makes his ghost power more meaningful. During his lifetime, Pete was a travel agent but couldn’t go anywhere due to his work and family commitments – despite working as a travel agent. When Pete discovered his power in season 3, he traveled to the airport and caught a flight to join his daughter’s family on vacation.

However, Pete’s power has a scary drawback: he starts to disappear if he leaves Woodstone for too long. Joan is a fellow Roamer Pete meets in season 4, who explains he can train himself to be away from Woodstone Manor longer over time.

Trevor Can Move Material Objects

Trevor’s Power Holds Weight

Trevor sends text in Ghosts(1)

Trevor (Asher Grodman) also possesses one of the more impressive ghost abilities: the power to physically interact with the world of the living. In the pilot of the CBS show, Trevor knocks a vase onto the floor, and Sam trips over it and falls down the steps. The moment is the catalyst for Sam’s ability to see the dead.

Ghosts Season 4 Is Wasting 1 Spirit’s Cool Powers & Here’s How The CBS Comedy Can Fix it

If Trevor’s subplot in Ghosts season 4, episode 15 proves one thing, it is that the CBS sitcom must switch up his predictable role in the series.

While his ability doesn’t have a lot of force behind it, meaning he can’t pick things up or open drawers, his ability to press things is significant since Sam and Jay have an iPad. With just one button at a time Trevor catfished Jay’s sister Bela and successfully maintains a job as as remote financial analyst.

Supporting Ghost Powers

Patience

Patience making the walls bleed in Ghosts
CBS US Ghosts Season 4 episode 2 Sam’s Dad

Patience, a Puritan ghost who was banished from her religious community in 1692 for being too extreme, has the disturbing abiltiy to make walls bleed. Moreover, Patience can use the blood to write on the walls. Patience’s ghost power is likely connected to her death from bloodletting, carrying her connection with blood from her death to her afterlife.

Elias Woodstone

Elias Woodstone in Ghosts
Matt Walsh as Elias Woodstone in Ghosts

Hetty’s husband, Elias (Matt Walsh), has a ghost power similar to Flower’s. When Elias walks through a living, his horny energy passes through them and arouses them. In Ghosts season 1, episode 13, Elias used his power to attempt to sabotage Sam and Jay’s business. Like Flower’s power, the Living who experiences it doesn’t remember what happened afterward.

Basement Ghosts

Basement Cholera Ghosts power

The spirits who dwell in the basement share a death and an afterlife power: cholera. They all died from the bacterial infection, and their power is like an extreme version of Isaac’s – if they pass through a Living, for 24 hour window, the Living gets the physical symptoms of cholera (though at least not the disease itself.)

Chris

Chris with parachute behind him in Ghosts season 4 episode 16

Chris, the stripper of Isaac’s dreams, perished in a parachuting accident above Woodstone Manor. If ghosts are jealous of Roamers, they will died again when they learn that Chris can fly and Roam. It’s unclear whether Chris will have risk disappearing if he doesn’t occasionally return to Woodstone Manor.

Sheryl

Sam’s mom, Sheryl (Rachael Harris), has a power similar to Isaac’s. Sheryl died at a seafood restaurant called Mojitown after she ate shrimp and suffered a severe allergic reaction. In Ghosts season 1, episode 11, “Sam’s Mom,” Sam visited her mom’s ghost and discovered that Sheryl could make “shrimp burps” that she and Jay could smell.

Ghosts Without Any Known Powers (So Far)

Carol

Carol looking shocked in Ghosts
Carol in Ghosts U.S.

Pete’s ex-wife Carol cheated on him in life, then unfortunately for Pete, she died at a Halloween party on the property choking on a donut hole. While she has no manifested powers yet, she already was causing trouble at Woodstone Manor, although now that she married one of the Redcoat soldiers, hopefully Carol can quietly fade into the background.

Stephanie

Odessa A'Zion's Stephanie smiles in the living room from Ghosts season 4 episode 20

Stephanie is Woodstone Manor’s resident teenage prom ghost – though she would point out she’s technically Trevor’s age. Stephanie does not know what her power is, but considering she sleeps most of the year, maybe she’s not conscious long enough to activate them. Her death at the hands of a serial killer is gruesome and doesn’t inspire an obvious power.

Nigel & Other Revoltionary War Ghosts

Unlike the Basement ghosts, the Redcoat soldiers from the Revolutionary War don’t share a death or have any noted powers. Nigel, who was engaged to Isaac, was accidentally shot by his future fiancé. The others, including Baxter and Jenkins, died in the battle shortly after. They live together in a shed on the Woodstone property.

Bjorn

Bjorn in Ghosts
Ghosts (US)

Bjorn is Thor’s son who died at the property just next door. If they shout from the second story windows, they can just barely hear each other. He died while searching for his missing father, although it’s not stated specifically how in Ghosts.
