Doc Season 2 Sets Up The Italian Series’ Best Twist A Season Early
The American adaptation of Doc is returning with a much bigger story in its second season, and it looks as if one of the original Italian series’ best third-season twists might be right around the corner. If so, Doc season 2 could tackle a game-changing bump in the road that tackles a major concern rooted in the show’s basic premise.
Arguably one of the best medical dramas on TV right now, Doc generally changes quite a bit from its Italian predecessor, Doc – Nelle tue mani. For instance, the original protagonist’s brain injury was caused by a gunshot wound from the father of a deceased patient. But one Italian plot point could now answer one of Doc season 1’s biggest mysteries.
Doc Season 2 Suggests Amy’s Future Relies On Her Regaining Her Memories
Amy’s Trying Desperately To Remember Who She Used To Be
One of the most significant plotlines introduced in the Doc season 2 trailer is that, with the help of seemingly experimental equipment, Amy is trying to regain her memories in an effort to recoup the eight years of medical expertise she lost in the crash. It even appears that, to at least some extent, the treatment is working as intended.
It also seems Amy will be pursuing her treatment under a bit of a time crunch. After Richard Miller’s departure in the Doc season 1 finale, new chief Dr. Joan Ridley is going to be making staff cuts and appears to have Larsen in her crosshairs. Retaking her boards hardly makes up for losing nearly a decade of hands-on experience.
Regaining her memories could play a central role in the development of Doc’s love rectangle storyline as well. It’s safe to say that Amy’s not making friends with Nora anytime soon, but it’s not easy to villainize her for cheating on Jake when she literally has no idea if she ever loved him half as much as she did Michael.
But those might be low stakes compared to another storyline hinted at by the trailer. In what appears to be a key flashback, Amy is shown treating an older patient who bears resemblance to another man that storms the hospital with a gun. If this relates to Amy’s past, one twist from the Italian series would severely jeopardize Amy’s life.

Amy’s Apparent Memory Recall May Not Be What It Seems

Loosely based on Doc’s real-life inspiration, former ER chief Pierdante Piccioni, the original Italian series’ Dr. Andrea Fanti mirrors Amy Larsen in at least a few key ways. Both characters lose several years of memories after a traumatic brain injury and have to cope with the death of a child, and they both have secret romances with their fellow doctors.
Now, it appears Doc season 2 is filling its expanded episode order by combining elements of Doc – Nelle tue mani seasons 2 and 3. For instance, season 2 introduced a new chief of internal medicine who knew Fanti from college and acted on ulterior motives. This likewise describes Felicity Huffman’s Doc season 2 character, albeit with several other significant adjustments.
Fanti’s memory recall became a major conflict in season 3, but regaining the memories themselves wasn’t the only problem. Although Fanti does begin recovering his past, as it seems from trailers Amy will as well, the memories that Fanti experiences are unreliable due to his subconscious creating them from fragments. He’s essentially looking at a reflection in a broken mirror.
It wouldn’t be outlandish for Doc to borrow this twist, particularly since Amy’s treatment is established as a concern. The trailer reveals both emotional and physical side effects such as irrationality and nose bleeds. It makes sense for false memories to be on that list as well, and this would be a particularly dramatic time for that issue to arise.

Misremembering Her Past Could Raise Her Stakes In The Present
Amy Larsen’s worst personality traits in Doc don’t entirely vanish after the crash, so it’s hard at times to get too invested in whether she regains her memories or not. But false memory recall in Doc season 2 could threaten Amy’s life on several different fronts. Her personal and professional lives are already hanging in the balance without further complications.
If Amy can’t even trust her own mind, she can’t rely on regaining any medical knowledge she’s lost from the last eight years. She can’t trust how she feels about Jake, and she’s still a target for the kind of shenanigans Richard tried to pull when he framed her for malpractice. Anyone could manipulate her recall for their own gain.
The latter point would become particularly relevant if the armed man in the trailer relates to one of Amy’s cases. An attempted shooting itself wouldn’t be particularly fresh, especially after Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago Med both ended their most recent seasons with a hostage crisis. However, Amy not even knowing why she’s targeted puts a mysterious spin on the story.
More than anything, having Amy regain her memories in full without consequence would essentially rob Doc of the only hook that truly sets it apart from other medical dramas. Not only would the false memory twist elevate the storyline, it might arguably be necessary to ensure the series makes it to another season.
