Diddy’s Lawyers Seek Reduced Sentence, Cite Childhood Trauma And Drug Abuse

Sean “Diddy” Combs will be sentenced to prison next month after being convicted in July of two counts of transportation for prostitution under the federal Mann Act. However, his legal team believes he should be released on time served, which they explained in a memo to Judge Arun Subramanian, submitted on Monday, September 22.
The disgraced mogul has been locked up in Brooklyn, New York’s Metropolitan Detention Center since September 2024 after being hit with sex-trafficking and racketeering charges, and his lawyers believe he shouldn’t be sentenced to more than 14 months.
“In the past two years, Mr. Combs’ career and reputation have been destroyed. He has served over a year in one of the most notorious jails in America, yet has made the most of that punishment,” wrote his legal team, according to Complex.
“It is time for Mr. Combs to go home to his family, so he can continue his treatment and try to make the most of the next chapter of his extraordinary life … [It] is the only just and fair sentence that could be imposed,” the letter continued.
Diddy’s Lawyers Wrote About His Childhood Trauma And Drug Issues
Elsewhere in the 182-page document, Diddy’s lawyers stated that his legal issues stem from a tragic childhood since his father Melvin Combs, a Harlem drug dealer, was murdered when Diddy was three years old. The killing eventually led to the Bad Boy founder having anger, anxiety, and abuse issues, as well as a drug problem, things he didn’t deal with professionally until being sent to jail.
The lawyers also stated that Diddy being on painkillers led to “erratic” and “unpredictable” behavior, causing him to physically assault some of his exes, including Cassie Ventura.
Diddy Received More Than 75 Letters Of Support
Nearly 80 people in Diddy’s life sent letters to the judge ahead of his sentencing, including some of his children, his mother Janice, and Dana Tran, who he shares a 2-year-old daughter with named Love. Former City Girls rapper Yung Miami, real name Caresha Brownlee, also wrote a letter. She and Diddy began dating in 2021.
“For three of those years, I was in a public relationship with Sean, and during that time, I witnessed and came to know a different person than the one often portrayed,” she wrote.
“Behind the scenes, he was loving, genuine, supportive, and always encouraging. He motivated me, believed in me, and helped me grow both personally and professionally,” her letter continued.
Brownlee then wrote about Diddy’s charitable work, like feeding the homeless on Thanksgiving in 2022 and checking himself into an anger management program, as well as therapy. She also referred to him as a “man of God,” stating that he needs to be in his children’s lives.
Diddy’s sentencing is set for October 3, and he faces a decade in prison.
