Dexter: Resurrection – Harrison Has A Much More Tragic Backstory Than Dexter
WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Resurrection episode 9.
Dexter: Resurrection episode 9 proves that Dexter Morgan has never had the most tragic story in the Dexter franchise. Although Dexter was infamously “born in blood,” losing his mother, Laura Moser, when he was just a child, he is not the only character with that disturbing backstory, and is arguably the most well-off among the others.
Before its unexpected cancellation, Dexter: Original Sin gave viewers additional context into Dexter’s upbringing and early years as a blood spatter analyst at Miami Metro PD. It also took a deep dive into Harry Morgan’s backstory like never before, revealing that he had lost a son to drowning before adopting not only Dexter, but his troubled brother Brian as well.
Harrison Has Dexter’s Most Tragic Backstory
While Dexter Morgan and Brian Moser were both born in blood, Dexter and Rita’s son, Harrison, was also placed into a similar situation by Arthur Mitchell, better known as the Trinity Killer. Harrison’s father is a serial killer, and his mother died in front of him at the hands of a serial killer, which is arguably a worse situation to come out of than Dexter’s.
Additionally, Harrison has two loving step-siblings that he doesn’t even know because they left Miami when he was a baby, primarily because of Dexter and Rita’s death. Harrison was then raised by a serial killer, Hannah McKay, as his adoptive mother in Argentina until she died, only to then learn that his father had abandoned him and faked his own death.
What’s more, Harrison spent his teenage years bouncing around foster homes. When he finally meets Dexter in New Blood, his father tries to help turn him into a vigilante killer like him, convinced that Harrison has a Dark Passenger like he does.
On top of all this, Harrison was convinced by Dexter to shoot him and believed he was dead while he killed another man, Ryan Foster, who still haunts him. All things considered, Dexter has made Harrison’s life a living hell, and it’s remarkable that he’s as well-adjusted as he is in Resurrection.
The Ice Truck Killer’s Backstory Was Already More Tragic Than Dexter’s Back In Season 1
In the same vein, if Harrison has the most messed-up backstory, then Brian Moser comes in at a close number two. He was also left in the hands of the system after Harry and his wife sent him away for being too violent and frightening. Rather than being able to find a loving family, Brian’s hatred and sense of abandonment just festered and turned him into a monster.
Brian never had anybody to help him with his “Dark Passenger,” even though Harry should have been the one to do so. Brian also had to keep his distance from Dexter until they reunited in season 1, but Dexter never even knew who he was talking to. Harry continued to bury the fact that Brian even existed to protect Dexter. Had Dexter not lucked out with Harry’s Code, he would have likely been just like his dozens of victims.
