Dexter: Resurrection Episode 9 – Batista’s Tragic Fate Confirmed

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS ahead for Dexter: Resurrection episode 9.

The penultimate episode of Dexter: Resurrection season 1 confirms the tragic fate of one of the OG returning characters from the original series. Many devout Dexter fans had speculated that there would be some type of showdown between Dexter and this character, which would ultimately result in the end of his life.

With only one episode left of Dexter: Resurrection season 1, a rage-fueled Dexter is set to go after the man who killed this franchise standout, Leon Prater. After Prater learned that Dexter wasn’t who he said he was, the rideshare killer Ronald “Red” Schmidt, he became completely unpredictable and abruptly shot to the top of Dexter’s kill list.

After Batista confronted Dexter in Resurrection episode 7, there were plenty of fan theories sparked online that he would die by the end of the season. Resurrection episode 9 proves that Angel didn’t have a chance going against Dexter, but not in the way that viewers had likely thought it would have played out.

It could be argued that Prater saved Dexter’s life, since Batista was seconds away from choking Dexter out. Part of Dexter thought that his death by the literal hands of Batista would have been justified and poetic, considering that the two were once great friends and colleagues.

Batista became yet another key Dexter character who wasn’t necessarily killed by Dexter directly, but died largely because of Dexter’s actions. He now joins the likes of Rita, Doakes, Debra, and his former wife, Maria LaGuerta, as people close to Dexter who lost their lives in the crossfire of his secret life as a prolific serial killer.

Batista was too far gone by Resurrection episode 9 that he no longer considered his own safety or listened to his survival instincts. After discovering Dexter’s kill room in Resurrection episode 8, it’s quite surprising that he would continue to dig deeper into his pursuit of Dexter singlehandedly. At the very least, he should have called Quinn and told him the real reason why he was in New York City.

Batista continuously put himself in situations throughout Resurrection episode 9 where his death was almost inevitable. Dexter gave him a fair warning in episode 7, saying, “This won’t end well for you,” which turned out to be spot-on. Additionally, once Batista went into Prater’s mansion, there was no getting out unless he worked alongside Dexter to escape, which he was never going to do.

Losing Batista is a major blow to the Dexter franchise, considering he was a key character in every Dexter season, even the canceled prequel Original Sin. Hopefully, Quinn won’t let go of Batista’s death without searching for answers, perhaps finding Batista’s voice recorder and going after Dexter in Dexter: Resurrection season 2.
