Dave Star Confirms FXX Sitcom’s Cancellation After Season 3
Two years after season 3 of the 90% Rotten Tomatoes sitcom ended, Dave star Andrew Santino confirms that the FXX show is officially over. The series revolved around a fictional version of the aspiring and neurotic rapper David “Dave” Burd, whose stage name is Lil Dicky.
There has been ongoing speculation about whether the series would continue with Dave season 4. In February 2024, FX Networks put out a statement that the show was being put on pause as Burd took an extended break to focus on his music and other creative opportunities.
While speaking with Variety, Dave cast member Andrew Santino has now confirmed that the show is not on pause and that it is over for good. He explains that he and the other cast members are grateful for the experience, but that discussions of the series being paused are “nonsense.” Check out his comments below:
That’s not on pause. That thing is gone. I don’t even know why that narrative is out there, that’s not true. We’re not doing the show. I think people said it was on pause to protect the relationship of the show, but that’s all nonsense. The show is done. We are all going our own way and doing our own thing. It was a great run, and we all enjoyed it very much. It ran its beautiful little course, and that was a wonderful moment in time. I’m happy I was a part of it, but in no world do I think the show would ever come back.
What This Means For Dave
After more than a year of silence about Dave‘s future, it is not too surprising that the show is over after season 3. FX Networks’ statement about the show being on pause made it clear that the series was not returning in the near future, and now Santino’s comments clarify that it will not be returning at all.
Andrew Santino played Dave’s roommate Mike.
Much like Apple TV+ being reluctant to say Ted Lasso ended with season 3, FX was likely reluctant to put an official end to Dave. Ted Lasso season 4 is in the works at Apple TV+ right now, although Dave is unlikely to get the same kind of unexpected resurgence.
With a 90% critical score and 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Dave was well-liked, but it never became the kind of popular culture phenomenon that Ted Lasso did. Most importantly, key members of Dave‘s cast have seemingly moved on and are not eager to return for a potential season 4.
Our Take On Dave Being Officially Over
As arguably one of the best sitcoms of the past decade, it is disappointing to know that Dave will not be continuing. However, season 3 did end on a largely satisfying note, with a finale that included a Brad Pitt cameo.
It is better for a show to end on a strong note and leave the audience wanting more than to needlessly stretch it out over too many seasons. With Burd, Santino, and other cast members focused on other projects now, Dave season 4 might not have been as compelling as its predecessors anyway.
