The Pitt creator R. Scott Gemmill teases the show’s second season will feature a heartbreaking sick baby storyline. The Pitt is a medical drama that depicts what happens in Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s ER, and the series became a sensation after its first season premiered in January 2025. The unflinching and acclaimed series is set to return for season 2 in January 2026.
Between The Pitt’s incredible cast and emotional storylines, the show has become a popular culture phenomenon. Since The Pitt is easily one of the most-talked-about shows of 2025, it has millions of fans who’ve wanted to know everything about The Pitt season 2, and now Gemmill is teasing an important storyline.
Per Deadline, while speaking during the Sublime Primetime Drama panel at the Writers Guild of America, Gemmill stated that The Pitt season 2 will feature a baby being treated in the ER for 15 hours.
While he didn’t explicitly state that the storyline would be heartbreaking, that seems all but certain given that the baby will need to be treated for that long. Gemmill also joked about how difficult filming the baby storyline was for the team behind The Pitt. Check out his comments below:
Some genius came up with an idea of what to do with a baby this year over 15 hours. That’s a whole season. You’ve got to use multiple babies. They can only work for 20 minutes … By the time the shift is over, which will be in January, this baby’s going to be walking to craft service by himself.

One of the biggest reasons why viewers were blown away by The Pitt season 1 was that the show tackled so many difficult topics. Most medical dramas would never cover so many potentially emotionally devastating storylines, especially at the same time. However, The Pitt wasn’t afraid to cover the kinds of real-life tragedies that ERs deal with in an accurate way.
Given that Gemmill has teased a season-long sick baby storyline for The Pitt’s return, there is no doubt that the show will continue to deal with tough topics. The only question at this point is how many more highly taxing medical cases the team at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital will have to cope with alongside the sick baby.
Our Take On The Pitt Season 2’s Upcoming Heartbreaking Storyline

During The Pitt season 1, the show featured a storyline involving a child who was in peril. The show treated what happened with enough grace that it never felt like the writers were trying to pluck at viewers’ heartstrings. Instead, the story felt like an accurate depiction of what ER doctors have to cope with.
Based on the credibility the show has established, I am confident that the sick baby storyline from The Pitt season 2 will be realistic and emotional without feeling manipulative.
That said, I have to say that if The Pitt season 2 ends with a tragic outcome for this storyline after featuring it for many episodes, that will be hard for me to take. Still, I have enough faith in the team behind The Pitt that the baby storyline will work well.
