Creator Bryan Fuller Provides Update On Show’s Future
The creator of TV’s Hannibal has given an update on the show’s potential future. The series was inspired by Thomas Harris’ novels, 1981’s Red Dragon, 1999’s Hannibal, and 2006’s Hannibal Rising. It focused on a criminal profiler named Will Graham and his complicated relationship with and attraction to Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a forensic psychiatrist, incredible chef, serial killer, and cannibal.
Widely regarded as one of Mads Mikkelsen’s best projects, the show was a masterpiece of acting, writing, cinematography, and culinary expression. That made it heartbreaking when the show ended after only three seasons. This resulted in fans campaigning for Hannibal to return for a fourth season, practically since the show initially ended in August 2015.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan for Dust Bunny, Hannibal’s creator, Bryan Fuller, was asked about the show returning. In response, Fuller stated that can’t happen right now because there is a lack of clarity about who has the film and TV rights to the franchise. However, Fuller also revealed that the team behind the show wants it to return once the rights situation is resolved. Check out his comments below:
ScreenRant: At one point, wasn’t there talk of more Hannibal?
Bryan Fuller: Yeah. Well, it’s complicated now because Martha De Laurentiis died and she had a certain section of the rights, and now, Thomas Harris is trying to get the rights all under one umbrella. And I think that’s going to take a couple of years of straightening out. But the entire cast wants to come back: Mads, Hugh, Lawrence, Katie, Caroline – like everybody’s in. It’s just a matter of: Will the rights be able to be figured out again?
What This Means For Hannibal’s Future

Based on Fuller’s comments, it seems clear that Hannibal‘s return is far from imminent. Legal battles based around film and television rights can take years, and Fuller didn’t say anything about any network or streaming service interest in bringing the show back.
Still, the possibility of Hannibal returning for a fourth season shouldn’t be dismissed either. After all, the team behind the show wanting to return is extremely meaningful. Other long-gestating show revivals have happened seemingly mostly due to intense interest from highly invested cast members.
Film and TV rights do clear up sometimes, as evidenced by the fact that an official Jason Voorhes short film was produced and that franchise is expanding. With that in mind, another Hannibal season still remains within the realm of possibility.

For people who love movies and TV shows, being let down by overrated media can be incredibly frustrating. After years of hearing how great a film or series is, watching it and not seeing what supposedly is so fantastic can almost feel like a betrayal.
Fortunately, the praise for Hannibal that is out there is entirely warranted because there is only one thing that was disappointing about the show–that it ended far too soon. If the disappointing reality that Hannibal ended after three seasons could be rectified, that may be the most exciting TV news that horror devotees like me could get.
