Cliffhanger Reboot Gets 8-Figure Distribution Deal With Row K As It Aims for 2026 Release
The Cliffhanger reboot has officially gotten a large distribution deal and more release details as a result. The movie reimagines the 1993 film of the same name. This original starred Sylvester Stallone as a mountain rescuer who has to guide a group of thieves. The movie did well at the box office, making $255 million worldwide.
The 2026 version of the story is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and gender swaps the lead role, which will now be played by Lily James. The cast also features Pierce Brosnan, Nell Tiger Free, Olivia-Mai Barrett, Bruno Gouery, and Franz Rogowski. The movie has been generating a fair amount of buzz due to its connection with the original Stallone film.
As per Deadline, Cliffhanger has now landed a major distribution deal. This massive move is described as an “eight-figure deal,” and is stated to be one of the biggest coming out of the market of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie will now be distributed by Row K. The deal has Cliffhanger lined up for a wide release spanning 3,000 domestic screens. It will be released in 2026.
What This Means For Cliffhanger
The Collet-Serra version of Cliffhanger updates some details from the Stallone original. James now plays the daughter, Naomi, of a seasoned mountaineer named Ray Cooper. They are attacked by a gang of kidnappers, but Naomi escapes, and must put her survival skills to the test to save her family.
Cliffhanger‘s big distribution deal is a good sign for the film. In an era where a lot of action movies are being relegated to streaming, this reboot is not only being released in theaters, but it’s getting an extremely wide release. This will help boost its box office potential as it hopes to match or pass its predecessor.
Our Take On The Cliffhanger Deal
Cliffhanger needs to go big in order to make the kind of impact it strives for. Reboots can really be hit or miss, and that can be especially the case when remaking beloved action content from decades ago. So, while a deal this financially significant is a risk, it could pay off big time for the Row K team if the movie has the kind of impact it wants.
I think Cliffhanger‘s success will ultimately hinge on its release date. It might have a tough time competing if it ends up in the summer blockbuster range, but could be a runaway hit in April or May given the right conditions. Row K has made a big move so far with the deal; their next step is to make sure they execute it right.
