Chicago Med Star Marlyne Barrett Exits Show Before Season 11 Premiere
One of Chicago Med’s biggest stars won’t be part of the show when it returns for its 11th season. Chicago Med focuses on the employees and patients of the Gaffney Chicago Medical Center with most of the attention paid to the hospital’s ER. Chicago Med premiered in 2015 and is a pivotal part of Dick Wolf’s One Chicago television franchise.
Chicago Med’s cast has always been one of the keys to the show’s success. If the show’s actors weren’t able to make viewers care, fans wouldn’t have been so interested in Chicago Med’s season 10 ending with such a surprising cliffhanger. Sadly, it turns out that Chicago Med’s cast will be missing one of the show’s original stars when the show returns for season 11.
On August 28, 2025, Variety reported that Marlyne Barrett would not be part of Chicago Med when season 11 begins. Barrett portrayed Maggie Lockwood during Chicago Med’s first 10 seasons. The outlet reported that Barrett was exiting Chicago Med for “personal reasons” and it is unclear if she might rejoin the cast later during season 11.

Many talented actors have come and gone since Chicago Med began. As a result, it may seem like Barrett not being a part of the show when Chicago Med season 11 starts is more of the same. The truth of the matter is that Barrett being gone from Chicago Med will have a huge impact on the show.
In terms of Chicago Med’s fictional hospital, Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, Barrett’s character being gone is a gigantic deal. As the ER’s charge nurse, Maggie has been shown to play a pivotal role in how the hospital helps patients. If the show just has someone take her place and things run smoothly, that will be hard to believe.
For fans of Chicago Med, the bigger loss is having the character of Maggie gone. Arguably the heart of the show, Maggie was always the rock that the show’s characters turned to. That made viewers connect with Maggie in a way that will be very hard to replace. It is also unfortunate that Maggie’s own storylines are coming to a sudden stop.

Marlyne Barrett leaving Chicago Med is extremely disappointing for fans like me. A huge part of the show from the beginning, Barrett’s absence will be felt in a big way.
The important thing to remember is that Variety reported that Barrett left Chicago Med for “personal reasons.” While fans can’t know what is going on, and nobody should try to invade Barrett’s privacy, she clearly has a reason to exit the show that goes beyond her career. As a fan of the show and Barrett’s work, I have to respect that.
