Charlie Hunnam’s Ed Gein Role Will Be Darker Than Sons Of Anarchy’s Jax
Charlie Hunnam has played a variety of fascinating characters throughout his career, but the actor’s upcoming project looks destined to displace Sons of Anarchy‘s Jax Teller as his darkest role. While he may be best known for the motorcycle crime series, Charlie Hunnam’s best TV shows and movies prove how versatile he is, having been involved in numerous genres.
Projects like The Gentlemen proved he can combine comedy with criminal drama extremely well, while the likes of Pacific Rim and Rebel Moon give him some interesting sci-fi films as well. His impressive resume already suggests he’s one of the most underrated actors around, but his new Netflix series is bound to be his most terrifying performance yet.
After showing how dark and violent he can be in Sons of Anarchy, Hunnam has been cast as Ed Gein in Ryan Murphy’s Monster: The Ed Gein Story. The show will undoubtedly be controversial given its sensitive material, but Hunnam’s role in Monster season 3 is also extremely exciting, as it will see him play someone even more disturbed than Jax.
Charlie Hunnam’s New Role As Ed Gein Is His Darkest Character Yet
With Hunnam set to play notorious serial killer Ed Gein when the newest installment of Monster arrives in October, it will undoubtedly be darker than anything he has done before. Although he has tapped into his more twisted side in the past, playing fictional criminals simply doesn’t compare to taking on the role of a real-life murderer.
Gein’s horrific acts are so cruel and unsettling that some people believe Monster season 3 shouldn’t happen, especially after the controversy over Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story in 2022. Focusing on serial killers and their wicked crimes is always likely to leave viewers feeling conflicted, emphasizing just how sinister Hunnam’s role will be when the series premieres.
The actor’s physical transformation will only make seeing him as Gein more disturbing, especially since Hunnam is more than talented enough to accurately convey the killer’s unnerving mannerisms and personality.
Sons of Anarchy‘s Jax Teller may have been unhinged, but this performance will truly display just how Dark Hunnam’s acting can get, and if it’s anything like the previous installments of Ryan Murphy’s Monster series, the show will inevitably be a very uncomfortable watch that isn’t for the faint of heart.
Charlie Hunnam’s Role As Jax Teller In Sons Of Anarchy Already Proved He Can Play A Twisted Monster
When Sons of Anarchy first started, Jax was an outlaw with semi-good intentions, but by the time the finale rolled around, he was an irredeemable monster, proving he has what it takes to play such a controversial part like Ed Gein. SAMCRO had criminal connections even during the very first season, but they were also somewhat admired by Charming’s residents.
Despite running guns and having rival factions, the motorcycle club helped the local community, but they slowly grew more corrupt, with Jax eventually becoming consumed by this. After becoming President, he tried to make the club go legitimate and steer away from crime, even attempting to leave the group while Clay was still in charge.
However, he was never quite able to create a peaceful life and became more and more unhinged as the show went on. Jax’s decision to kill Clay in Sons of Anarchy was one of many immoral choices, as he also injected his ex-wife with heroin to try and force her into a relapse and went on a killing spree in the final season.
The protagonist killed Jury, ordered Juice’s death, and even offed his own mother, not to mention being involved in all of SAMCRO’s crimes. Fans may still have had a soft spot for Jax even after everything he did, but his story was extremely dark, and he was undoubtedly a cold-blooded killer come season 7, which Hunnam expertly portrayed.
Murphy’s New Series Will Be Huge, But Sons Of Anarchy Will Always Be Hunnam’s Biggest Show
Given the controversial nature of Ryan Murphy’s Monster series, there is no doubt that Charlie Hunnam’s new project will be huge, but it won’t surpass Sons of Anarchy. Even a decade after it finished, Sons of Anarchy remains popular and has a dedicated fan base, with the show cementing itself among the best crime dramas of the past few decades.
Having played Jax for seven seasons, fans naturally became connected with the protagonist, who is easily one of Sons of Anarchy‘s best characters. With Hunnam’s performance being integral to making the story so iconic and keeping viewers invested, it’s hard to argue that any of his other projects come close to being as memorable as the gritty motorcycle drama.
Monster: The Ed Gein Story will undoubtedly bring the actor mainstream attention once again, especially if it follows in Monster: Dahmer‘s footsteps, which was one of 2022’s most talked-about shows. That said, it simply won’t have the lasting impact of Sons of Anarchy, especially with people still hopeful that Hunnam will somehow return to the franchise.
His upcoming Netflix series is certainly still worth getting excited about, and I can’t wait to see how he portrays the serial killer, but regardless of how it performs, Sons of Anarchy will always be Hunnam’s greatest role.
