The Great
The Great is one of the best modern interpretations of a historical drama series on Hulu. Starring Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great, the empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796, the series is surprisingly hilarious and highly entertaining without worrying too much about all the historical facts.
Fanning is the true highlight of the series and is one of the reasons why it’s so critically acclaimed. The show earned an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 96% and won 2 Emmys, both in the Costumes category. The Great features an ensemble cast around Fanning, including Nicholas Hoult (Superman), Phoebe Fox (Task), and Adam Godley (Breaking Bad).
The Great ran for three seasons and 30 episodes from 2020 to 2023. It was created by Tony McNamara, known for Poor Things, The Favourite, and The Roses. If you enjoyed Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo’s performances in Poor Things, it likely had a lot to do with McNamara’s great writing, which earned him his second Oscar nomination.
Collider notes in its review of The Great season 3, “What ultimately makes The Great’s latest season so, well… great is how it manages to feel like the natural next evolution for the series as a whole, with shake-ups that are bold and potentially thrilling for what lies ahead.”
Luther
Fans of sleek and no-nonsense cop dramas like Reacher, Bosch, and Ballard will love Luther, featuring one of Idris Elba’s career-defining leading roles. Often considered one of the greatest shows of the 2010s, Luther stars Elba as the titular protagonist, who is one of London’s most brilliant homicide detectives.
Luther is a thrilling detective series that deserves to be categorized with HBO crime classics, even if it’s actually a BBC series. It features a strong ensemble cast including Dermot Crowley (The Death of Stalin), Michael Smiley (Alien: Earth), Warren Brown (Strike Back), Ruth Wilson (His Dark Materials), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones), and more.
Despite spanning five seasons between 2010 and 2019, Luther has a shockingly low number of episodes at just 20 in total. Each episode is roughly an hour long, so it will still take you a good amount of time to get through the entire series. Netflix also released the sequel movie Luther: The Fallen Sun in 2023, which should be watched after season 5.
Luther earned a Certified Fresh 88% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and audiences alike and got an 8.4 rating on IMDb. It was nominated for 11 Emmys, four of those for Elba, but was unable to take home any of those awards. However, Elba took home a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice Award for his iconic role.
Broad City
Broad City is not only one of the best comedy series on Hulu but is also one of the best comedy shows of the 2010s, period. A definitive millennial masterpiece, Broad City follows two offbeat young women trying to figure out themselves, their relationships, and their careers in the bustling New York City scene.
If you’re looking for the perfect dose of 2010s nostalgia this week, then Broad City can absolutely deliver. Not only is it hilarious, but it also features early appearances by comedy stars such as Paul W. Downs, the co-creator and actor on HBO’s Emmy-winning series Hacks, Hannibal Burress, known for The Eric Andre Show and Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Emmy winner Wanda Sykes.
Broad City is one of those comedies that quite literally delivers joke after joke on a line-by-line basis. It’s created by its co-stars, Abbi Jackson and Ilana Glazer, who play exaggerated versions of themselves, much like Larry David in Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Broad City earned a near-perfect 99% Rotten Tomatoes score for all five of its seasons. At 50 episodes, all roughly 22 minutes apiece, binging Broad City is a breeze and the best way to watch the series. If you’re looking for a great feel-good show that’s also modern, unique, and creative, then it doesn’t get much better than Broad City on Hulu and Disney+.
Fargo
Although creator Noah Hawley is already onto his next project with the masterful sci-fi series Alien: Earth, one of his other TV masterpieces is also worth getting into on Hulu. Inspired by the classic Coen Brothers movie of the same name, Fargo is one of the best anthology series of the 21st century.
Fans of Taylor Sheridan’s celebrated series Landman will also appreciate Fargo, which features both Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm in separate seasons. The series also features performances by Martin Freeman, Carrie Coon, Jason Schwartzman, Juno Temple, Ewan McGregor, Chris Rock, Bob Odenkirk, and more.
Fargo earned 7 Emmy wins and received a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score across all five of its seasons, which were released between 2014 and 2024. Its second season, released in 2015, stars real-life husband and wife Kirsten Dunst and Jesse Plemons, as well as Jean Smart, Ted Danson, Patrick Wilson, and Nick Offerman. It earned a perfect 100% RT score.
Like the movie, the entire Fargo series takes place in and around Minnesota during winter, maintaining the classic film’s signature style and tone. You can pick and choose which seasons you’d like to watch without having to worry about continuity, but the entire series is really worth the 51-episode deep dive if you’re up for it.
Atlanta
Atlanta will always be one of the greatest series that Hulu and Disney+ have to offer. The series was created by the visionary creative mind of Donald Glover, who collaborated frequently with his writer brother Stephen Glover (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and director Hiro Murai (The Bear).
Glover created Atlanta in 2016 after already gaining a platform as a cast member of the hit Dan Harmon ensemble comedy series Community (also available on Hulu) and as a rapper and musician by the name of Childish Gambino. Atlanta also gave rise to film and TV stars such as Brian Tyree Henry, LaKeith Stanfield, and Zazie Beetz.
Glover’s biggest inspiration for Atlanta was the acclaimed David Lynch series Twin Peaks, which gives you an idea of what you can expect from the series if you haven’t seen it yet. Atlanta masterfully blends realistic drama with absurdist comedy while also speaking on bigger societal issues, such as race, in incredibly unique and profound ways.
Atlanta is one of those series that feels like it has its own vibe and consciousness. Deeply ingrained in modern hip-hop culture, Atlanta follows Glover’s protagonist Earn, who struggles to be a good father and boyfriend, all while managing his cousin Paper Boy’s rap career.
Atlanta earned a Rotten Tomatoes score of 98% and won 7 Emmys, including one for Glover’s lead performance and several for cinematography in a comedy series. For a deeply immersive viewing experience unlike anything else on Hulu, Atlanta is the perfect show to get lost in this week on Hulu and Disney+.
