A24 Developing TV Series from Oscar-Nominated Barbie Writer

Barbie writer Noah Baumbach has officially signed on to lead A24’s newest TV show. Baumbach worked alongside his wife, Greta Gerwig, on Barbie, but he also contributed to Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Marriage Story (2019), and White Noise (2022). Baumbach even earned four Oscar nominations for his work on Barbie, Marriage Story, and The Squid and the Whale (2005).

A24 has also had its share of success at the Academy Awards, having earned recognition for Moonlight (2016), Minari (2020), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), and The Brutalist (2024), among others. The studio was founded in 2012, and it has quickly risen to become one of Hollywood’s foremost brands.

After becoming a prominent force in theaters, A24 is interested in building its TV brand. According to a report by The New Yorker, Baumbach is now attached to A24’s newest show, Hope. It will be an adaptation of Andrew Ridker’s comic, which tells the story of a Jewish family that faces a devastating scandal.

This is not Baumbach’s first time working with A24. He previously contributed to While We’re Young (2014), a comedy that earned $21 million ($29 million today) at the box office against a $10 million budget ($14 million today). Baumbach will work alongside Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the duo that created The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story.

A24 produced Civil War (2024), Uncut Gems (2019), Hereditary (2018), and more.

This is a strong collection of screenwriters, which is a promising sign for a show that truly does need to be a success for A24. It represents the studio’s first major foray into the TV landscape and could decide if it remains a theatrical brand, or if it can branch out into other avenues in the future.

After Eddington (2025) proved to be a critical and box office disappointment, theatrical instability is becoming increasingly worrying for studios. Rising budgets and declining grosses are making profitability more challenging, while shows are finding success through streaming. Hope could be an opportunity for A24 to prove its adaptability in the ever-changing media landscape.

Our Take On A24’s New Show

Barbie exploded into popularity for a reason when it was first released. While Gerwig’s directing talents certainly contributed, the tight script and engaging characters made for a compelling movie that drew crowds to theaters. Baumbach certainly contributed to that success, prompting a movement that might not have existed otherwise.

Hope is unlikely to capture the same level of attention that Barbie did, even if it does have the same screenwriter. Still, having Baumbach attached is a great sign that A24 is continuing to draw proven talent to its projects. The studio is undoubtedly hopeful about the project, and it could be a major turning point for A24.
