A Nostalgic 2000s Comedy Revival
Glen Powell has a comedy movie in the works, and it just got way more exciting. Glen Powell’s best movies have mostly come over the past few years, as his supporting role in Top Gun: Maverick launched him into stardom, making him one of the most coveted leading men in Hollywood. The actor has since proven to be a rom-com heartthrob, an action hero, and a capable comedic lead.
Glen Powell’s movies have developed a reputation for their nostalgic feeling, with him involved in reboots like Twisters and The Running Man, as well as genre revivals like Anyone But You. His most recent project, Hulu’s Chad Powers, continues this trend, offering a breath of fresh air for audiences missing classic, unadulterated comedies, much like those of the 2000s.
Glen Powell’s Chad Powers Feels Like A Classic 2000s Comedy
Glen Powell has tried his hand at romantic comedy and crime comedy, but he’s yet to dive into a full-blown Will Ferrell or Adam Sandler type of lunacy. He evidently has the comedic chops, as displayed by his new series Chad Powers, in which he plays a disgraced college football star who tries to revitalize his career by using a masked persona.
After the first two episodes, I was astounded by how much the series felt like the comedy movies I grew up on, such as Old School, Dodgeball, or even Anchorman, introducing an absurd concept with only a slight dose of moral through-line. The standout is, of course, Powell’s performance, as he’s willing to sacrifice his movie star persona to be the butt of the joke.
The show has received divisive responses from fans and critics, but I’m not surprised. For fans of Glen Powell’s recent movies, this title is going to feel strange and offbeat. However, if you’ve been waiting around for a bizarre, nostalgic-feeling comedy that doesn’t pull many punches with dark humor, Chad Powers is a great option.
Glen Powell Is Working On A Comedy Movie With Judd Apatow
Whether you know his name or not, practically everyone has seen a movie made by Judd Apatow. He’s responsible for writing and directing classics like The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, as well as producing films like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Superbad, and many more. Apatow defined the comedy genre for a decade, and there are many who feel nostalgic for those types of movies.
With Glen Powell’s comedic and writing skills demonstrated by both Chad Powers and 2023’s Hit Man, I’m even more thrilled to see Powell and Judd Apatow working on a new comedy together. Glen Powell will co-write and star, with Judd Apatow writing and directing. This could become an instant classic.
